Hoping for some informed and constructive opinions if possible please. I have tried to benchmark already but the BMW website is currently down and there aren't that many cars to compare to on PH etc.

I'm considering buying a car from a mate of mine (essentially I'd be settling the outstanding finance and taking the car). I have known him a long time and absolutely trust him - I also know the car has been looked after, has travelled mainly A roads/motorways and has never been in a bump.

Basically I'm after opinions on whether it seems a good buy or not. Mate isn't too fussed either way - it would suit him to get out of the car (and finance) earlier than the scheduled next summer but it's no big deal ultimately. I am however under pressure to fix the other half up with a car to replace hers asap.

Car is an 08 plate X5 3.0sd M Sport in Space Grey (our preferred colour).
It is well specified including the usual stuff (Nav/Bluetooth etc) and Electric memory sports seats, Xenons, Dynamic cruise, panoramic roof etc. It is not 7 seats but we don't need that anyway.

It has done around 65k miles.

Available for around £31,500.

Thoughts and opinions?

Check the classifieds to compare. From a brief look it seems to be very expensive for the miles.

I'd want to be paying 25k for that. Glasses suggests around 27k in excellent condition.

Do you need a diesel?

Yep, defo overpriced. 25-27k is realistic but depends a bit on youself. Will you put a lot of miles on it or hardly any so it evens out a bit?

Parents sold their 8 month old 35d M-Sport in silver with beige leather(no toys) for 33k not that long ago and it had only done around 13k iirc.

Likewise, I thought it was too much money.

I would suggest he has a fairly high settlement figure and that's the problem. By virtue of that, you'd be helping him out rather than getting a bargain.

Go to xdrivers.co.uk and they will be very helpful with any questions you might have.

Thanks for your comments gents - very useful and much appreciated.

You'll have guessed the very fact I was posting about the deal indicated I wasn't sure and essentially my concern was the price give the mileage. We'll do around 12k per year in it which isn't big mileage but it is maybe too many to even out a high mileage car in time.

It doesn't have to be diesel but it is certainly the preferred option. I know a petrol car might be cheaper at the outset but you soon forget that when you're living with 18MPG (or whatever) and it'll be me lumbered with filling it up every 250-300 miles which is just a ballache. I have the 35d engine in my E60 and think it's great so I would much rather that than the 30d engine.

Thanks for the links Teeds. One of them suggests the car I'm looking at isn't too far our - your link is the single turbo engine car, in SE spec with only slightly lower mileage at £28k - taking into account the better spec and engine the price difference seems OK to me. The other link looks a good value car (although again it is the 30d) and the specification makes up for the SE rather than M Sport - it might even be in the mix although I'd have to have the wheels sorted - black wheels on a black car are a bit too 'WAG' for me (and that's saying something given we're looking at X5s in the first place!)

Why are you comparing 2007 3.0D SE's to a 2008 SD M Sport.

Its like comparing a 2007 530d SE to a 2008 535D M Sport

You've totally picked up on my point already.

I dont think its a million miles away price wise - it would be nicer if it had lower mileage, but it is what it is.

If your 12000 miles a year contains a lot of urban driving you'll be surprised at how bad the fuel consumption is....low 20's at absolute tops. I struggle to get more than 25 mpg on a run if I am doing 70 mph. We do have roof bars which will probably take a couple of mpg off.

BMW's figures are so optimistic it's not funny.....

Great car though....most comfortable car I have driven though the suspension is really bad over speed bumps or pot holes. I will be running mine for a few years as it does the job so well...mpg aside.

+1

I ran a pre LCI e70 3.0d SE and got 28mpg at best and 22mpg round town. Bit of a shock since my 535d did 38mpg over long runs.

I came from a 535d too which is why I was so shocked I think. It is after all a very big car...or truck as our friends from across the pond like to call them rolleyes

Many thanks Beardy10 and daemon - interesting. My (pre LCI) 535d does around 32-33 overall and I was kind of hoping the more efficient version of the engine might get close to 30 - sounds like it won't!!

Search is down (surprise surprise), anyone know what the 4.8 petrol returns? 20 MPG?

I averaged 18.6 in my 4.8iS (previous X5) over 30,000 miles or so.

Around town, very low teens, on a run the best I got was 25.

Thanks - maybe around 20 is about right then (allowing for improved engine efficiency)

On the way back from the South of France today, I got 40mpg fully loaded and travelling overnight, and at 4am got some serious speed, so not being a slow coach (only got flashed twice wink )

That's why I moved from an X5 to 535D!

No question the 535d is a great car - mine will be staying if we go ahead and buy an X5 (or similar). Our problem is that we need something we can load the kids easily into and chuck bikes or whatever in the back.

My missus won't consider an estate (pity as I saw a nice S6 Avant recently) or people carrier (I reckon the S Max looks OK) so all I can think of is an X5 type car.

I had pretty much the same dilemma - i couldnt warm to estate cars either. The e70 x5 is a superb car. I loved mine to bits.

The new one with the 8 speed box might be a lot better on mpg...it could easily waft along at 1500 rpm on a motorway but the gearing on mine means it's more like 2500 rpm. That would obv make a big difference. be a while before you can buy one in the low £30k's though.

Spent a bit more time looking over the weekend. On balance I think daemon is right - the car I have been offered is about the right money. I couldn't find any other 35d M Sports for around the £31-32k mark.

There are some with mediocre (read poor) specifications with 35-45k miles at around £35k but not much below that. Older, 30d, SE specification cars are not appropriate comparators.

That said given the car is likely to do around 10-12k per annum, I'm struggling to go for it knowing when we change it in around 3 years it'll have 100k on the clock and that is such a hurdle to overcome when selling (rightly or wrongly).

Not sure what to do - might look at 30d cars or else up the budget to take in cars around £35k (which I had hoped to avoid). Decisions, decisions.

You're right though - it'll be a long while before the latest version is available for anything in the low £30k's though.

Just checked with my dad and he got £33,250 for his, so deals are about, you just got to be brazen in asking for a good chunk of discount! wink

Go private, as cash is king and your one of very few people with it in their pocket.

Still keeping my eye out - there are a couple around but I'd need to be going up towards £40k which I can do if necessary but it's then £10k more than I started out intending to spend so obviously I'd rather not if I can avoid it.

Missus has now decided she wants 7 seats (so she can cart her mother around around with us from time to time - oh joy) which limits the options considerably - there are not that many 7 seat X5s around it seems.

Going to look at a Q7 over the weekend - she loves them, I think they look great from the front but slab sided - we'll see when we have had a proper look and drive (in part to see if she could park it in a field never mind Sainbury's).

Not many cars being advertised by private sellers that fit the bill. I did e-mail one PH seller early on Sunday about an 07 4.8 M Sport for £29k (before she dropped the 7 seat bit on me) but 4 days later they haven't come back to me - might explain why the advert states having to drop the price for a quick sale!! Might sell a but quicker if they respond to inquiries!!

They tell me the search is half the fun.......not convinced.
