I've just moved into a house with a vegetable patch and have consequently inherited some vegetables which are in the process of growing. Unfortunately I have no idea how to tell when they are done - cooking them I can do, growing them less so. So, could any kind person indicate how I determine that potatoes, radishes, leeks and (unknown but possibly sweede) are ready to be uprooted?

Radishes grow very fast, so pick them when you want to eat them. Don't let them get big - they go woody and horrible.

Leeks the same - pick them when you think they look big enough to eat. They will be fine right into winter though.

Swede gets better after it has been touched by frost!

Potatoes - depends on variety and when they were planted. Take a pic and post it here and someone will tell you. Generally, the leaves start to brown, then you can dig up the corner of a plant and see how they are getting on!

There is nothing like home grown veg thumbup We've just had our first year of carrots/radishes/lettuce etc and it honestly does taste so much better. The radishes were ace - really hot and fiery cloud9

Leeks seem quite happy to sit there quietly for a full year!
