Where can I watch planes taking off near Heathrow?

I know how this sounds, but I'm at home today looking after my 16 month old little boy, who I've been encouraging a fascination of all things mechanical.

He loves planes so thought I'd run him over to Heathrow to kill an hour or two. I'm probably about 30 mins away.

Can anyone give me a postcode or some rough directions to an area outside where we can park easily and get a decent view of planes coming in and taking off.

Not taking off but the Green Man pub was always good and has a decent beer garden with plenty of kids play equipment, and has the added bonus of being a pub!

This information is many years old but I doubt things have changed much.

Otherwise is the observation deck still on the roof of one of the central (123) terminals?

We used to use one of the short stay car park rooftops but I think they move you on from there now.

The "Perimeter Roads" are OK. You might get moved on by security though. The viewing galleries are all closed now

From J14 off the M25, take the A3113 signposted to Terminal 4. A bit nearer the terminal is an Esso garage where there are usually lots of cars parked - thats where the plane spotters hang out, seen them loads of times.

Northern Perimeter Rd at the back of the Renaissance used to have a part of that stupid 'barrier' attached to the chainlink removed.

Why the hell is watching planes take off such a big deal to the authorities? Anyone determined and sophisticated enough to pull off any kind of 'incident' is likely able to do it without much need for standing around spotting

A Google search for PLANE SPOTTING AT HEATHROW comes up with some useful sites and tips on how to go about it.
Once chap says:
I've taken my kids down to Heathrow more than once, and the best place to watch the planes is a little grassy area not far from Hatton Cross tube station, right outside the south-eastern perimeter fence at the end of Myrtle Avenue (ordinary residential road).
