Its come that time of the year where insurance needs to be renewed.

I used to pay £180/month for a BMW 330ci as a second driver at the age of 20. Now however, they are trying to charge me £250/month. I purchased the car in April and started paying that price then, so I thought the increase in premiums due to our bad winters would have been reflected then.

Needless to say, this left me shocked and have no idea where to look as it was them who offered me the cheapest quote originally. Now Im left with 2 options, try find something cheaper (unsuccesful so far) or sell the car frown

Does anyone know of anything I can do to bring the price back down?

Try the comparison websites, tedious but necessary IMO.

Try adrian flux, direct line and churchill

Does this mean insuring yourself as a named driver on a vehicle owned by you?

If so, awaits delivery of large popcorn order biggrin

I initially thought - Sheesh that's £3000 per year!!! Then I saw 330 and 20.......

Sell the car - buy a grp 1-4 car get insurance in your own name - build up some no claims so maybe in a couople of years you can get reasonable premiums on a more performance oriented car

Being a named driver means you won't ever get any NCB - happy to be corrected if I'm wrong - so you'll end up paying top dollar for a long time till the age factor works in your favour

Cool, cool....so it's your car, and you drive it most of the time but it's cheaper to get your mum on the ins as the main driver/owner?

So, you're "fronting" which is illegal, and you will:

1. Have your insurance cancelled
2. Be done for insurance fraud.

Well done for outing yourself.

Try insuring it as the main driver / owner - I think you'll find the current increase quite acceptable.

£180 a month as a named driver? You've been had and it's STILL not valid insurance.

20 year olds drive 1.2 Fiestas and 1.4 Clios for a reason. Valid, cheaper insurance.

330Ci is no place for a kid TBH. That's why your insurance is so expensive.

In a car thats relatively underpowered that is yeah... If I can afford to buy a 330ci, why shouldnt I be able to be insured on it?

You can be insured on it, just get the policy in your own name. If you can't afford that then you can't afford the car.

You can only afford a car if you can afford the insurance to drive it, legally, on the road. It sounds like you've not been doing that. Whoops.

You're quite clearly clueless how insurance works.

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.
Am I right in thinking his mum could be the owner, but he may be insured as the main driver? He hasn't said that he is a named driver or main driver?

I drive the vehicle here and now, doesnt really make me the main driver so I have the right to being a named driver

Didnt know "fronting" was looked down on that much either

True, but reading between the lines (and this is Pistonheads remember) he has insinuated he is the main driver.

This is the reason I don;t have the cars I want right now - I can afford to buy what I want, but I can not afford the insurance, running costs etc OR I refuse to pay 4K to an insurance company because it's absurd and I'd rather spend it elsewhere!
