Hi,

I'm thinking about renting a large (5+ bedroom) villa for a week next April for my 40th birthday and inviting a few friends over.

I need some help on choosing a location. Must be a cheap flight from London, short haul so people could come for the weekend, preferably warm(ish) with a choice of restaurants/bars nearby.

I thought about the Algarve but the flights are not as cheap as I expected. Any other suggestions?

TIA

Colin

Depends where from. I tend to use BMIBaby who offer cheap flights to one of the Spanish airports though you often have to look at their 7 day view to get the best price and it varies though Murcia and Barcelona and Palma or Menorca seem to be the best bets. That said, villas in Mallorca are more expensive and ilnland Spanish villas are cheaper than the coast. Almeria airport is also an option with cheaper villas.

Last year, a load of us lads all went to malaga in January I think it was - not warm but not cold but dead as a doornail and that was with Ryan Air.

We went to Kalkan in May for my birthday. Was great and the villas are amazing for the money.

Spain.

Cheap and easy travel from many airports through the budget airlines (£100 all in should be attainable) and only a couple of hours away.

There are some lovely places about. Have a scope on ownersdirect.co.uk.

However, for a 5 plus bed villa expect to pay upwards of at least £1k a week for even a relatively modest place.

I recently discovered a 5 bed villa on Lanzarote with own pool for £500 in Feb and the trick is always go inland. However, some of the private renters are likely to be reluctant to rent to an all male party in my experience for obvious reasons.

To a group of 20 somethings maybe.

Not really. Even 50-plus. Besides, it's not really to do with age, it's to do wth values and many owners don't want the risk.

We've been to a couple of places in Spain now, one being a property that was probably worth more than all of our houses put together, and even as a group of 7/8 blokes, all mid to late 20 somethings and perfectly upfront about it, haven't ever encountered one flat refusal on the basis of our party and age.

Maybe we have just been lucky but I guess there is a way to approach and talk to owners to gain their trust. We are always perfectly upfront about our values, intentions and expectations from the outset.
