temp gauge and heated mirrors troubles...

Hi, I have a temp gauge on my newly aquired 500 that moves about like a windscreen wiper! it is anywhere between 50 and 90 when warmed up, the fans work as they should and the engine runs fine (checked the temp with IR gun and is ok).
I have found the ECU and otter switch water temp sensors, but cannot find the water temp sensor for the dash gauge, the bible does not help. I think the sensor is defective and i want to change it, anyone had this problem?

Also the heated mirrors come on and off at will, all by themselves....whats going on here!!

Any advice would be appreciated.

The gauge sender is near the ECU sender but it's mounted on the end of a hexagonal brass boss on the front of the engine behind the distributor.

The heated mirrors turn on with the fan when the doors are closed and turn off when you open the doors or the timer expires. Or something perplexing like that... I never got it either.

As has been said the sender is tucked down behind the distributor near the thermostat housing. Tricky to get to, it may just be loose or not making a very good connection.

Also check your water is topped up - if it's a bit low then it might be that the sender isn't always in water, giving you that variable reading.

The wire that goes to the sender has a resistor in line (22ohm from memory on mine). It runs in the loom on the nearside of the engine behind the rocker cover.

I'll have a look behind the distributer tomorrow, is it possible to replace it without taking the distributer out?
There is a temp sensor next to the ECU one pointing upwards but its not connected and i could not find any sign of a wire to go on it, is this normal or just usual wacky TVR way of bunging up the unused hole!

Also my heated mirrors switch on all by themselves with the fan off!

That's the Range Rover sender, left there as a bung. Whilst it's not calibrated for use with the TVR gauge, it will work with a 120R resistor in series with it.
