I've a cousin in Christchurch, wonder if she felt anything, will try and find out!
No way you could sleep through that! Damned scary anyhow, and I wish the aftershocks would quit, aparently were due a '6' soon...The citys had its arse well and truly kicked most of the 'old' brick built buildings in the center have been damaged or fell over.

Not meaning to be rude in any way and I do honestly hope all of you out there are OK, but I wondering about something. Builders and construction workers must make a fairly good living in countries on or near tectonic plates. The level of rebuilding required would mean a lot of work could potentially be gained.

Surprised there aren't more there with two tectonic plates banging past each other. Perhaps they normally rub along ok but have a spat every so often.
Sorry to hear of the damage though.
NZ has around 14,000 earthquakes a year on average and around 20 of those are stronger than 5.0. Sorry to hear of the damage though.

I was there in 95/96 and Mt Rotarua erupted. It was cool.

New builds are supposed to meet a required standard of earthquake resistance. Most of the damage in Christchurch is to the old traditional 'English' style buildings.
