Power steering fluid level question...

I noticed the power steering pump was audible so i checked the fluid level and its not on the dipstick.
Ive just put half a litre in and it still didnt show on the dipstick. Strange i thought, as it soaked into my sock from under the car.
It seems to have stopped leaking ( the drops were dripping off the chassis around rear of gearbox).
Did i over fill it? It's still not showing on dipstick but the pump noise has stopped.
I took the cowl of the front and the fluid is about 10mm up the neck of the reservoir on the pump itself.
Any ideas you lovely cerbie people?

Ive just been having a closer look...
The reservoir actually on the steering pump actually says its at max, therefore i assume that one of the pipes from the remote filler chamber at the front of the car must be an overflow, am i correct?
The new fluid ruining my socks seem to be coming from this pipe fixed to the chassis by the gearbox making me think it is an overflow.
What i dont understand though is why i cant get any fluid to show on the dipstick but it says max on the actual pump.
Am i being stoopid or are they all like that sir?

This is all very odd. 
Std cars have the reservoir by the airbox at the front of the car, a small black screw lid by the right hand bonnet hinge. This has an upper and lower mark on the dipstick attached to the cap. If you have a long thin translucent plastic pipe sticking up from your reservoir then it sounds like you have a retro fitted Electric PAS system.
Also, there should be no fluid at the rear of the gearbox. The std pump is attached to the end of the compound pump set behind the water and engine oil pump. This is located alongside where you're feet are when you're sat in the car (in the engine bay of course).

Ive just been talking to Donny and he's answered all my questions.
It transpires that its had an uggraded pas pump at some point by APM.
The original resevoir at the front isnt connected to anything hence the puddle and no fluid on the dipstick!! (except this one)!
