Questions:

How good is 993 Tiptronic?

And tiptronic S?

And 996 Tiptronic, which may be a better system?

I mean from the point of view of spirited driving and performance, not for ease of use in traffic. I have seen some tiptronic S 993s for sale, but don't know whether a tyre smoking, tail drifting boy racer like me would like it.

I have driven tiptronic in 968 etc. just not in 993.

Does it make the engine sound like a hairdrier, like it does in the 968?

They're very good. Gave a late 993 tip s a good spanking. The only drawback is you don't have total control off the line. They are also about 1.5 secs slower to 100.

Either way I wouldn't pay more money for one, but i'd definately have one if the car was right, if you see what I mean.

Having tried both the tip and manual, I would recomend a tiptronic any day (on a 996 as I have not tried 993 at all).

Aamir must do all his driving in built up areas then...

Actually, for an automatic, the tiptronic boxes in anything post 964 are pretty good. I've driven 993 and 996 with tiptronic and they still slush going up thru the 'box, no matter what anyone says, but that's inevitable and they never match the feel or speed of a manual gearbox.

The 968 has to be the worst example of a tiptronic installation and should only be used as a barometer for such a 'box when choosing between a 968 thus equipped and a Daf Daffodil Variomatic.

That was two years ago Melv, when I was a gent's hair stylist.

Since then I have set up a League Against Cupholding Devices and accidentally bludgeoned a badger or two.

Saying a tip is 1.5s slower than a manual isn't accurate.

First of all, its less than a second, and secondly to achieve this gap a driver will have to side step the clutch on launch and short shift every gear change.

How many people would do this in their Porsche... and for how long before you require a new clutch/gearbox?

I have gone for the Tip-s and it is really good! However, it does take control away from the driver, for example it upshifts 250-500 rpm short of the red line even in "manual" mode. How annoying.

Using my 993's steering wheel buttons, I find the changes up and down blindingly quick - they certainly seem quicker than I'd expect to achieve with a manual box. That said, it could be down to me being an old fogey as opposed to you track-day demons!

For example, I was coming home from the West Country last week along the A303 and found that there were few occasions when I could open up. But when the opportunities to pass occurred, a quick downward flip of the switch sent the engine note soaring and saw the tail-gaters disappearing into the middle distance. Very satisfying! And I don't reckon I could have downshifted that quickly on a manual.
