Hi guys/gals

Just browsing my options for insurance on either a TVR Griffith or Chimaera, however, being 21 no-one will touch me, despite my 4 years no claims, a clean licence, an advance driving qualification due to my job and I currently own a BMW 330 so I have history of driving powerful cars!

I've browsed the forum at other peoples quotes which are low, but they never say their age!

I'm looking at the Classic Car route, but again many won't touch drivers under 25 and when they do they demand a ridiculous premium for the privilege which works out more than the large 'mainstream' insurance companies.

So far I've managed to get a cheap-ish quote of £2000 but it was TPF&T only with 10000 miles limit.

I'm not expecting, earth shattering saving but an insurance company who will help me out!

So who would you recommend?

Many Thanks -T

I had a customer who came in my Croydon Bodyshop who had smashed the side of his clio to bits, I asked him what he wanted to do , He said pay cash, After we had a look i told a price he said he would put it through his insurance if he could,,
He said his premium was 4000.00 a year, 20 years old, Thats why your insurance is so deer, I think his cars a write off, hes hit someone else thats more out of the insurance companys pocket, Plus personal injury & car hire,,,
330 BMW,,, without being rude isnt in a class with pace with a griff ,, believe me,

Thanks, I fully understand the difference between my car and the Griff, after test driving one, I fell in love. The intoxicating noise, the looks and pace of it.

Unfortunately there are young a*seholes out there that drive like sh*t off a shovel to be kind, and I know I will never get a extremely low price, but I pay £700 fully comp for the 330 so looking at late £1k for fully comp???

If you've been looking at past posts about insurance you'll probably know most of the recommended names, and as already mentioned there a a fair few TVR owners in their early 20's. That said it seems like 1.5-2k is likely to be the premium. If you can afford it go for it. smile

It might be worth asking the insurance company if they'll reduce your premium if you accept a much higher excess than normal. Additionally you're quoting 10k miles p.a. Maybe try reducing your limited mileage to say 5-6k miles? Also worth remembering about running costs with these cars as they need servicing every 6k miles. At 10-12k miles p.a. you'll be looking at servicing your car twice a year.

Not sure how much difference any of that might make, but it might be worth a try.

Thanks for the replies guys,

I know I'm looking at the late 1k mark, that's definate. I'll give some of the companies I've found on the site a call tomorrow and see what I can source.

So far I've tried Compare and Confused and found the cheapest quote of £2100 TPF&T with '4YoungDrivers' that way I can keep the no claims bonus going.

If there are any other suggestions I'll be happy to take them.

Cheers

I have found that the compare website are useless for specialist cars eg Griff, Chim etc. For my G33 online comparison quotes for me ranged from £600 - £5000. I pay £170 ish including European breakdown cover (I have 9 points too). Limiting mileage is a big plus

I am not convinced that any of the specialist TVR insurance companies will insure you due to your age which mains you may be foreced to stick with the main stream companies?

Have you tried the usual trick of, limiting your mileage, increasing the excess, adding experienced named drivers, if you know any police add them on as they can bring policies down by hundreds of pounds.

Some of the specialists won't touch me until I am 25 which I know about, I'm also aware that I'm looking at late £1k+ for a years cover. I've done all the perfect touches. I'm listed as a police officer as most don't cover my actual job role so that should be better, I've also added the mother, but its only slightly cheaper by £50 and the excess is minimum at £500 but this is still £2000 for TPF&T only!!!

I'll keep hunting around and see what I can muster, as I ideally want to keep my NCB smile

I think the only way you will get it down to a reasonable ammount is if you get someone else to insure it with yourself as a named driver on 3k miles a year policy. But then you will need another car for work and just use the Tiv for fun, depends on whether you want it to be a daily driver or not I suppose.

Considering your age around the 2k mark is probably a good price. I am 27 with 10 years NCB, clean license etc and pay around £650 per year for 5k miles, but then that is fully comp, protected NCB, track day cover, Euro Cover, Agreed Value etc. The price does come down considerably at 25 and apparently at 30 as there are several companies that will not insure me until I am 30.

At the end of the day it depends whether you can justify spending 2k on insurance each year to own a Tiv?

Good luck with the insurance hunting and be sure to start a thread with lots of pics if you do end up with a shiney new Griff or Chim thumbup

If you insure the car in someone elses name as main driver and put yourself down as named driver, you will be commiting insurance fraud unless the other person uses the car more than you.

I have been told that adding an older female eg your mother, as a named driver can reduce the premium

Whoop!

I have an update, managed to find a quote for £1400, fully comprehensive for a Griffith 400 or £1495 for a Griffith 500 with Admiral.

This is a good result however, they quoted me £2200 no less than 2 days ago, with the same details?????

Nope both online using the same price comparison site just 2 days apart. I'll run another quote through in a few days and see what the result is. It's a bit like a lottery biggrin
