Cheap Insurance for young people on high performance cars?

Thought this was the place to ask for this type of thing,

Im just about to go to uni in South Wales and i want to take my 02 sti type uk with me

Ive seen a couple of threads on here about a few people who are good at this, any suggestions?

Im 21 with a clean license for 4 years (well 5 but im from the isle of man where you can pass your test at 16)

Why take the Scooby to Uni with you, its gonna get wrecked or pissed on. Sell the scoob, get a decent run around and have more money for beer down the union.

I'm going to assume that you already have insurance on your Scooby. call your insurers up to see if a change of address to uni will make a difference to the price of your policy. Bit of a no brainer tbh.

As it is YOUR car insured in YOUR NAME, then it should just be a case of changing address. If you feel like pushing it a little check how long you will be up at UNI and how long you will be home as you may get away with using home as your address but check with your insurer. You most definitely don't want them pissing about on a claim because you where parked on a halls car park and insured at home.

Maybe there's an issue with his current IOM insurers, who won't insure a car on the mainland (or Wales).

I was with Auto Trader insurance last year on my Impreza. I'm about your age and it was by far the cheapest policy.

Admiral were the cheapest by a long way on my V6 156, as far as I'm aware they are the part of the group that runs Elephant and Bell, so all 3 might be worth a try.

Out of interest, how much do you guys pay (rough figure) per year on these Imprezas? I tried getting a quote for one and pretty much couldn't get anything close to reasonable (although to be fair, I was just messing on, since I had only just passed my test at the time).

This isn't quite true. I work, but I could have just about managed with my car on the student finance. Plus he is going to Swansea or Cardiff (guessing), where rent prices are half what mine are (and my halls were ridiculously expensive compared to most) so he'll have more cash to play with.

Which uni are you going to and are they going to give you a permit to park on campus/at halls, cos I wouldn't fancy parking a car like that on the local streets, if it becomes known you are a student you'll probably find it gets damaged. That's what happened to my Audi.

edit: Oh yeah, try Sky insurance, they seem to like young driver and Jap cars. Plus they'll give you a massive discount for joining the owners club (As simple as joining a forum), and will discount for years driven as a second driver.

I didn't take my car to uni during the first year as i was in halls with no parking and the thought of leaving it parked in the rough part of Cheltenham didn't appeal. I did have it up for my final two years but i didn't drive much, came in most handy for the monthly shop at "big tescos".

Bizarrely this was true for me and that was getting on for 20 years ago now.
