Can someone tell me who they recommend for reasonable, efficient and most importantly knowledgeable PC repairss/maintenance. Got a major PC problem that needs a professional. Not hardware - windows XP is playing up.

TIA

If it's a software issue, the best bet is to cut your losses, back up everything to mass storgage (Tape, DVD or a load of CD's) and then FDISK your machine and start afresh. Will take you the best part of a day on and off to get everything up and running, but for the most part you are waiting for stuff to install, so can get on with other things.

As for getting it fixed try findng a mate who knows about these things and bung them a crate of beer for their troubles. Don't bother with PC World or any of these other high-street scheisters who don't actually know anything.

How bad is it? If you know roughly when it started you could use the "system restore" function to reset the PC to an earlier date. Not forgetting, of course, scandisk and defrag.

Take it to PC World and tell them you havn't a clue whats up.

Pay them £1000 and leave with £400 worth of new computer.

No, seriously. Try safe mode first (does XP have one?) incase it is hardware/driver based.
