Temp car insurance companies.
Discussion
Hi,
Looking to share a driving trip with the lads down south for a couple of days. Considering a temp car insurance as my own insurance can only cover 3rd party with owners permission to drive the car.
The car in question is a nearly new 325i cab and I don't feel comfortable not having fully comp insurance to drive the BM.
Are these companies (such as tempcover and dailycover) any good? Have any of you used them and if so have they been ok? I don't want to have to make any insurance claims but God forbid if it did come to that, how does it work?
I have been told that they are not worth the money and I would be better off just using my 3rd party cover as they will not pay out on any expensive claim(s) especially on a 23yr old driving a 325i. I don't mind paying the (what would it be, £40-50?) for the peace of mind. What do you think PH?

I found them very expensive compared to just taking out temporary cover with the car owners current insurance company.
Last time I was quoted nearly £300 for a week by a temp car cover website whilst Tesco would add me as a fully comp driver on my mums car for a week at only £45!
I am only 21 though so I assume the huge price is probably to do with this aswell.

But then if you stuff the car, you also stuff mum's no claims bonus and claim record.Last time I was quoted nearly £300 for a week by a temp car cover website whilst Tesco would add me as a fully comp driver on my mums car for a week at only £45!

Should be able to get temp insurance for a lot less than that anyway.... OP - shop around.

Op can't the owner of the 325 add you to their policy as a temporary driver? May work out cheaper.
Do this if the car is owned by and insred by someone else already.I have used temp cover to move 2 cars.
1 bought from ebay by a mate and i transported it to him as i was local and the other was to return my old lease car to the auction house.
At about £35 a day its pretty expensive.

His Insurance won't add anyone under 25 on that policy. It's not like its a super fast car, but i think 200bhp+ comes into it and that it is nearly new perhaps. It is a lot cheaper if you just amend the current policy on the car because that is what I do whenever I need a family/friends car and they need mine.
Thanks for the replies, but I guess am going to have to shop around between these tempcover companies. But I really wanted to know if they are worth the £££.
I wonder if this HPI insurance offer may work?

"Are there any restrictions?
You can benefit from up to 7 days' free insurance cover when you get a no obligation quote from Aviva. Provided the car you want to buy is a passenger car or light commercial vehicle (up to 3.5T) you can benefit from this special offer. Aviva will send you a cover note which you can use to insure your new vehicle.
Driveaway cover is available throughout the UK, plus the Channel Islands and Isle of Man, but not Northern Ireland. Please note: Annual quotes are subject to standard Aviva terms and conditions. Under some circumstances an annual quotation cannot be offered, e.g. if you are under 21 years of age or your car is ten years old or more, which means that a Driveaway Insurance policy will not be available to you. Only one 7 day free policy is permitted per customer per vehicle registration number."
Usually it would be used when first purchasing a car. That may be an issue - ask. Otherwise temp cover for a week for the price of a HPI report.

I'm 26, have 0 NCB and 1 at fault claim in the past 16 months. Most 1 day temporary insurers wouldn't entertain it.
I had to use tempcover.com - £35 for 24 insurance - pricey considering I only drove the car for 45 minutes.
I think you're right to want fully comp insurance, I know I would. Out of courtesy I even signed up for it online when in view of the private sellers to prove I had it before the test drive.

Well I've just been added to the FiL's insurance for his VW T5 camper for 4days. We also added my mrs so she can drive it if needed.
Anyway it came in at a rand total of........... £33 and that's including a £15 admin fee.
It was £17 for me to be insured and another quid for the mrs to be added.
Not bad at all I don't think.

Pleasantly suprised it was only £33 for both of you. I think car insurance is the only reason I can't wait to age...Anyway it came in at a rand total of........... £33 and that's including a £15 admin fee.

Update with my situation. His other insurance was willing to cover me for a day on his 535d m sport. He said he'll cover the cost because he owed me a few favours but I was insistant that I pay, but he didn't budge. So I don't know how much extra he would have to pay but I'l guess £50-60 considering he didn't owe me much.
Funny how insurance works,
325i cab - no.
535d - yes.
