Temp CV boot?

bit of an odd question, but i remember hearing a while ago that you could get temporary CV boot repair kits? Anyone know a motor factors I could buy one?

before everyone says - get it repaired properly- heres the situation. Just noticed my drivers side joint clicking on full lock- an inspection reveals split cv boot, no grease left inside. Tomorrow I have a job interview, tuesday and wednesday i have work, and thanks to the tube strike, i will have to use my car. Theres literally no time to get my car into a garage this week, but i still need to use car.

My thoughts were, if i could at least get one of those temp boot repair kits, i could at least pack the joint with cv grease, use the emergency boot, and it would least last till the end of the week. i seem to remember these temp cv boot kits could be wrapped around the cv joint, so you didnt need to take everything apart?

Does anyone know what im talking about, or have i imagined this?

If i cant get a temp cv boot, can i just keep driving the car? - my worry with the miles i'll be doing, that it'll run dry and the joint will snap. I really dont fancy getting stranded on the way to a job interview!

If it's only a small hole you could pump a load of grease in. It'll be ok to drive. If too much grease comes out, pump some more in!

I know what you mean, and I've heard other people talking about them but i've never found any myself.

Regards keeping on driving, if you can get some grease in there it will obviously help, but I doubt the thing will fly apart. I've driven with noisy CV joints for lots of miles with no problems other than the annoying clunk-clunking. At least you are aware of the problem and what it is- lots of people would carry on regardless.

The joint will be fine for a while, its knackered now anyway so filling it with grease and sticking another boot on wont make much difference.

thanks for the replies

if i cant find a temp boot then i'll drive it this week and see how it goes. I have a bit tub of lith-moly grease in the garage, so i'll lubricate the joint each night just in case it helps.


Why can't they make boots that don't eventually split? I think every car i've owned has, at some point, had a split cv boot

Halfords should have them. They fit around the joint. Normally you have to slide the boot down the drive shaft, the universal temporary ones are split down one side. you wrap them, glue along the seam and zip tie it up.

if its a small cut super glue will do a decent job of lashing it together for a week or two

clean it up with some thinners first

Especially CV grease, possibly the nastiest, hardest to get off substance you can find on a car

I've just used one of those today actually - to replace a drive shaft boot on a quadbike.
Tips - don't cut any extra off until you've fastened both ends.
Don't rush the glueing.
And get some jubilee/hose clips to use instead of the one's supplied (they're st).

I fitted one to a clio as a temporary measure and it was still on 2 years later leak free. The glue that comes with the kit does an unbelievable job.

As has already been mentioned, the joint is pooped already. Just drive it until you can change the whole thing.

Make sure you use propper CV joint grease though not just general purpose.

Its still a pain in the tits to fit a temporary one, as i said earlier, the joint is goosed, Just run it until you change the whole thing. I used to do this for a living!
Dont waste your time trying to bodge it.

hmm, okay, you've concinced me- i dont really fancy getting under the car tommorow anyway, when i should be doing some prep for interview!

They get a surprisingly hard life, with the ridges stretching and contracting slightly with every rotation of the wheel. That's several thousand times a minute at motorway speeds. Few materials can stand that kind of stress forever.
