I'm looking to buy a Land rover, probably a Disco. After a 110 and Vogue SE classic, both we V8s in the past, I simply don't think I can cope with the fuel costs of another frown

So do I finally do the Diesel thing and forsake my V8 burble or should I consider an LPG V8?
There do appears some scaremongering threads about LPG here and there

sorry if this has been done, but there appears to be a search engine issue whistle

Don't know about the previous ones but if it has the BMW 4.4V8, LPG is not a problem.

I'm pro both ideas. But here are few points I'd take note of:

-Check out LPG prices and local filling stations. And remember that while it costs less, a V8 will offer up slightly worse mpg on LPG. So do the sums add up for you? Is the cost of the LPG off set enough?

-Tuned diesels might not be that economical either. As low as 20mpg and the tuning parts too. But the tuned diesel does drive nicely. Personally prefer the way a tweaked Tdi drives to a stock RV8.

-LPG can be problematic. It shouldn't be, but there are loads of kits and setups, some work better than others. So do your research first.

-Do you off road or haul? If so have you considered where you'll put the LPG thank(s)?

-Is range an issue?

-Tdi's will run on SVO and other biodiesels. These can lower the fuel costs for the diesel.

-Gearbox? Most diesels are manuals, while most V8's are autos. Does this matter to you?

Only one comment from me.... how many diesel engines have suffered loss of compression due to piston ring or cylinder bore due to premature wear?

Hmm some good points,

I guess I just have never liked diesels and always had a thing about v8s!

It'll be used for family trips and some off roading. real off roading, not just a grassy field.

Just looked a 3.5k of 200 tdi disco I and 6k of TD5 disco II. Guess which i like more...

I have no idea, do enlighten me in my ignorance - I thought the td200/300 engines were noted for their longevity - am I wrong. Not so sure on the td5 ?

I did a bit of digging here before I bought my LSE.
If you plan on buying a V8 and then converting it then you are unlikely to see your money back. So look for one already done, but done well.
Be aware of where your LPG source is - the lists seem to show lots of garages but often they are industrial units so only open office hours. You may find that out of hours your nearest fill up is a good few miles away.

So far I've had no issues using LPG and it makes it feasible to run a V8.

£3.5k looks very expensive for a 300TDi!! 200/300TDi engines arwe bulletproof, 4.6 V8's aren't necessarily (V8's are the ones that can suffer slipping cylinder bores).
