"Second car" insurance recommendations

Evening all,

Against my better judgement and in somewhat of a spontaneous purchase I have bought an H-reg import MX5 on the 'Bay, going to pick it up and pay on Friday. However, my thoughts now turn to insurance-

I have an A8 insured with Bell, 7000 miles per year, 8-9yrs NCB (Protected) and Class 1 business use. About £350 a year. However, when I've run the MX5 through online sites i've been raped on cost- Nearly £600!

Can anyone recommend, from personal experience preferably, a broker that might be able to quote me for the 5, or alternatively both cars? I only need about 3000 miles on the 5.


Being as it is 20 years old, and is my second car, might I get a classic policy? I've tried a few online sites but all come up with ludicrous prices so feel that talking to a specialist broker might be the only way!

Preferably it'll also be a broker that would be OK with modifications- rear suspension apparently needs doing soon so I might upgrade it and also fit an LSD.

You've answered your own question, talk to a specialist broker. Comparison sites are aimed at the 80-90% of the market that is mainstream and priced accordingly, any deviation from the path of conformity sends the servers into melt down.

Hmm, the quote engine is suspiciously light on details it wants, however comes out at a modest £220 so is a very decent starter for ten. Thanks, keep them coming...

Tried Admiral multi-car a while back because I've always had reasonable quotes from Admibelephant, quoted on my A8 and HER mini, came back with something ludicrous like 3x my current policy, bloke on the phone did have the good grace to admit it was utterly ludicrous though!

I got a good deal with Admiral multi-car when I bought my Eunos almost exactly a year ago; they mirrored my main NCB as an introductory deal and it cost £275 to insure.

This year's renewal has just come through; the proof of NCB says 6 years, so I could easily go elsewhere, but since it's one composite premium I ran it through the site to see what each car's premium would be alone. £450 for the Eunos this year! Cripes, that's gone up a fair bit... I could insure a Boxster for a similar amount.

Personally, I use Aviva. Two cars, with my daughter as a named driver on the 2nd car. Couldn't get a better deal anywhere else including Admiral.

you should get a classic limited mileage policy on that for peanuts. Try mannings or any of the insurers listed here. These are the common ones used for TVRs but they should be good for you too

I use these for my landie, 2nd car, 3000 miles per annum, fully comp, £250 a year for a 21 year old with no no claims being used on the policy.

Peter Best insurance, fully comp, £100 excess, including no-excess windscreen cover, legal cover and, possibly the most important, roadside/recovery breakdown cover...

MX5's seem to be a 'problem' car when starting from 0 NCB... I'm assuiming a lot of people crash them when they first get them. I was paying the same amount TPFT for a bog standard grp 12 MX5 as my other car which is grp 18, worth considerably more and fully comp with a host of modificaitons including the dreaded insurance-killer a rollcage. The brokers couldn't explain why it was so expensive as obviously all the details where the same (location, age, occupation etc). only when they dialed in 2-3 yrs NCB did the quote for the mx5 get more sensible.

I almost had to sell the car before I picked it up as the quotes where all north of £1700! ended up at £900 for the first year and it's now dropped to about £500 with 2 yrs NCB. couldn't do any multi-car policies because of the rollcage on the other car.

Yeah, they are great. I've insured loads of cars with them, oddly it doesn't seem to matter what car it is the premium is always very similar...everything from a SIII LR to a Jaguar XJR, all within £50 of each other. To make it even cheaper tell them it's in a garage (if it is) and join a car club, doesn't matter if it's nothing to do with the car you've bought, Jaguar Owners Club would be fine, for example.

I've also gone with them - same quote, upped the mileage to 5000 p.a. though, and paying £208 with £150 excess. Same benefits. Fantastic.

Plus I also now have a spare 6 yrs NCB for a third car. Thank you Admiral!

RH Classic Car cover has worked out well for me on the 635csi.

Mine was £160 for the year, 5k miles, including UK and European breakdown cover.
