did anyone read this utter drivel?

I normally enjoy his column but this just smacked of spite/toys out of pram behaviour.

very cheap.

Link, please. Only if it's worth reading - I'm pushed for time.

Moderately amusing, but certainly not smacking of "spite/toys out of pram behaviour".

Over the years, the column inches devoted to this complete non-story of a never-funny/interesting part of a mildly diverting show astound me.

All those who decry Big Brother and reality tv as dumbing down the nation and yet who pay even the scantest regard to this are simply hypocrites. It's moronic.

Read it yesterday (as I can no longer read Clarkson in the Times), thought it rather amusing.

I expect the other two will do something similar soon in their columns so we can all go back to guessing which wrong stig it is.

Must say he does seem to write like he speaks. Drivel with a hint smirk.

Sometimes you have a good idea for a column and when you write it you find it won't stretch to the allotted word length.

There is definitely a strong feeling of petty annoyance coming from the TG camp that does come across a bit childish (no surprises there smile). But it's not in a real funny way, it's more like they feel hurt/betrayed by BC and are lashing out with "you're a nobody, you'll disappear into obscurity, you're a dick and nobody cares who you are, you'll be sorry when you're not our friend anymore".

Wilman's blog, Sniff Petrol and May's column have all gone with the joke that nobody recognises his name and he's whathisface Collins and making out that he barely more than a studio prop in terms of importance.

I don't know how to express it properly, but the more I hear from them the more it comes across like school children in a playground spat.

Sniff petrol have something to say too:

http://sniffpetrol.com/2010/09/01/fans-react-to-st...

There was shock across the world today after a High Court ruling finally allowed popular Top Gear racing driver The Stig to reveal his identity.

‘I was frankly shocked,’ said one Top Gear fan outside the court room. ‘I had no idea it was… sorry, what’s his name?’

Other fans of the BBC motoring show were equally aghast at the news. ‘I couldn’t believe it!’ wrote one contributor to a Top Gear discussion forum. ‘To think all this time it was a bloke whose name I’ve only just been told but now can’t remember!’

However, some Top Gear viewers were less easily confused. ‘I knew all along it was Lewis Collins,’ said one ardent Top Gear enthusiast. ‘He was quite good at driving in The Professionals and his drumming with Genesis was great. No, wait, who were we talking about again? Bootsy Collins?’

Meanwhile, other fans were less certain. ‘It’s Pauline Collins out of Shirley Valentine?’ wrote one confused fan on a BBC message board. ‘God, that race suit really covered up how small and Liverpudlian she is. And that she’s almost 70 years old. Fair play to her.’

Despite the confusion, the thoughts of all Top Gear viewers seemed to be summed up by one anonymous contributor to a news discussion group. ‘The revelation about this Joan Collins person is amazing,’ they wrote. ‘I look forward to being able to buy a book all about someone I have never heard of and in whom I have literally no interest whatsoever.

Where was the cheap shot/toys out of the pram? The pizza boy bit?

All seemed fairly amusing and well humoured to me, BC is hardly going to be the most popular member of the Top Gear team at the moment.

maybe i read it wrongly and toys out of pram wasnt the right phrase then, i was (still am) recovering from a huge stag do hangover, will re read, to me it just sort of smacked that the whole stig vs bbc thing is raging in the media and this was a vague attempt to alledge the stig isnt/wasnt ben collins.

+1

Columns are hit and miss, I've read far worse and didn't see any toys out the pram, just tongue in cheek humour. It's the done thing to mock racing drivers.

Not to me.
It just looked like a vaguely humourous take on the whole thing - I can see no evidence whatsoever of hostility, rancour, sarcasm or sour grapes. It's more like he's playing along with the whole thing.
