What is 'technically excellent' about lots of cylinders and big displacements? Surely it's what you do with the rules that defines how technically excellent your engine is. I suspect there will be still be lots of technical excellence in F1.

What stood out for me was the idea of restricting fuel flow, rather than fuel volume. I've always thought that a fixed volume of fuel, whilst good on paper, would be overly contrived because it would be impossible to calculate what the limit should be accurately enough to ensure people don't run out of fuel and also that engineering innovations that reduce fuel use are properly rewarded. If the figure is too low, everyone drives slow, if it's too high the fuel efficient cars aren't rewarded.

But limiting the rate of fuel flow would remove all the variables that affect fuel consumption, such as weather, racing strategy, the circuit, safety cars etc.

Could sound quite good if they let them rev to 25 or 30K. I predict lots of exhaust flames.

Its more relevant to the manufacturers. The drive for efficiency and low CO2 is behind the small capacity turbo's we're seeing in cars nowadays. The 1.2t Clio engine is brilliant, as are the smallturbo FIATs.

And according to the press Porsche are looking at a 2.7l turbo 4 in their next gen Cayman/entry level 911. It'll probably do 40mpg, put out 300bhp and still be a hoot to drive.

I'm old enough to remember 1.5 Turbo 4 pots blatting round Brands and Silverstone and from memory, the sound was a whole lot better than the V10 we had for a decade or more.

What about the BIG turbo-fans they use to get from one circuit to another? I'm sure they could do more to save fuel by looking at how the travel from circuit to circuit.

i take it we will stil have various engine builders? So we wil have a merc, renault, ferrari, cosworth etc? If so then i think its a good thing. 1.6, 4 pot or less and the only limiting factor is fuel. Not flow, just every car starts with the same amount.

I still think that what it really needs is for the capacity of the fuel tank to be regulated and then make it a free for all on the engine beyond that...

The idea with a 1.6 turbo 4 pot is that it is essentially an engine that most manufacturers are making right now (in fact it's the same size as a new spec WRC engine) so it should mean some new players (notably VAG are very interested)

I was right up against the fence at the 1986 European GP. I had ringing in my ears for days. I went to the doctor who asked if I'd been punched in the head as a large chunk of earwax had broken away and had fixed itself against the eardrum. It was heaven when it was washed out.

And I had earplugs in during the race.

That was noise.

well thats good news, seat powerd HRT?

scrap that, i have just pictured a grid with all the cars having Audi, skoda, seat, vw, lambo, bugatti power, same engines, however only one will have the imagine. Probabaly worth a few kph's
