I have a 3R with standard suspension - can these be refurbished or do I have to buy new ones?

No one seems to know unless I take them off and get them sent off to be checked.

Yes, your Bilsteins can be refurbished.
But I guess the bit that nobody seems to know is 'do they need to be refurbished?' Usual signs of wear are slight leaks at bottom of damper and/or unusual driving characteristics most noticeable 'on the limit'. If you have no leaks and the car drives completely normally, leave them alone.

The £70 is to refurbish only - they will come back looking the same as you sent them. I'm sure any decent paint shop can sandblast and repaint, if that's what you want. After one wet drive they will look pretty grubby again so personnally I don't see the point.

If, like mine he springs have gone rusty, you can buy these from noble, they arn't very expensive. Then I did mine we striped and resprayed the dampeners at the same time, cleaned the tread and added copper-slip to the adjusters.

Guys

Mine are leaking a tiny bit. So I need to get them refurbished.

But my springs also look a bit tired. So I was hoping to get them refurbished as well. Will BAD do this as well? Can I get them powdercoated to a new colour?

Or do they not last long? Do they just go rusty again very quickly??

So is this not worth doing?

Had new springs from Noble, they look brand new still after 18 months, dampners are starting to rust again. The springs are not very expensive from Noble.

seems like the best thing to is get the dampers refurbished /painted with new Noble springs .....are the M400n springs stiffer ?

BAD can do pretty much what ever you want but at a cost. i ended up getting a hole new set made which look much better than originals.

Yes - M400 springs are stiffer, but don't make the mistake of thinking that stiffer = better. The 3R Bilsteins and springs are much more compliant on gnarly B roads than the M400 Dynamics and Eibachs, thus allowing rapid confidence-inspiring progress. On track, it's the other way round; the stiffer dampers and springs (and ARB)of the M400 keep the car very flat into the twisties and allows you to get on the power early. Some have gone the 2 way adjustable damper route eg Nitrons or BAD which arguably covers the best of both worlds.

Yep I agree STD dampers are perfect for road use but I've done 4 track days this year and noticed the front tyres are rubbing on the clip !!!!! Thinking I need a slightly firmer setup ...... But not too much !!

If your doing trackdays and you enjoy tinkering with things you'll love having adjustable shocks, it's nice being able to fine tune them if you notice the car isn't feeling quite right. I tend to stiffen them up slightly when I get to the track then soften them before I drive home, I'm no racing driver but it works for me.

I'll go for refurb I think.

But I'll buy new springs. How much are they?

I guess BAD just refurb the dampers so they don't leak anymore - I guess they don't do anything else in terms of cleaning and making them look nicer??

When I sent mine to him they were in such a state that refurbing would've been pointless, the chrome shaft had corroded wearing the rubber seal so they wouldn't have lasted long before going again but I don't think he would've got them clean and shiney anyway. He was going to send off the springs to be stripped and powdercoated as I was going to have them red. Just so you know, the springs we have on our shocks dont fit the shocks he makes, unless things have changed since I bought mine. Best thing is to give him a call, really nice guy and knows his stuff!

We take any leaky shocks back to bilstein they have a place close to us, the chrome on the piston does wear more on the front but as they make them it's not a problem for them to fit new pistons.

Hi Matt can they service and revalve them a bit stiffer and supply stronger springs at a sensible price ?
