I can not get my head round this. I am getting quoted £2500 to be insured on a classic mini with a 1275 engine! I currently have a car with a 1000cc engine and my quote is £1100. Can anyone help? I am 19 by the way.

Try and get a 998 if you want a mini, should save you near to a grand and if tuned well will feel as fast.

If tuned... the insurance company will hit the roof... right?

I read an article (I think on pistonheads), that when you put in your details with regards to engine size, the quote doesn't change within the ranges of 1000cc to 1400cc.

I suspect the NI bit is your major problem.

If you go classic, make sure it is a policy that allows you to build no claims discount (if such a thing exists).

If not, you will be just putting off the inevitable screwing from the insurance industry.

We seem to be getting one of these types of post a week at the moment. Insurance is expensive for everyone due to a combination of factors (number of uninsured drivers, personal injury claims, the extra kit that is in modern cars - the addition of air bags for example must have had a fair impact on the average repair cost).

The answer to expensive insurance for young drivers is the same as it always has been - get a cheap, low powered car and build up some no claims.

nah, but in my experience you need to be over 21, and have another 'main' car to get a classic (actually, most people call it 'cherished' so you can have fairly new cars on it) policy. It also helps if you are a member of a recognised car club (piston heads don't count I'm afraid!) Or did you mean you need to be over 30 for a policy from Peter James?

You see this would not be my main car but a second car. I have a main car with my own policy. So does anyone know of any classic insurers in NI that insure 19 year olds?
