Accord 2.2 ICTDI alternatives?

Hello everyone. Long time lurker needs some suggestions.

Im after a fully loaded wafter to sit alongside my Eunos.

Only criteria are.

Its big and comfortable lots of toys.
60mpg on a run.
Not a BMW or Audi I don't like the imagine.
2-3 years old or less.
Less than £15k.

Saab 9-3 TiD? 150bhp version. Good fuel economy, good performance and very comfortable on a long run. Not the last word in dynamic excellence but at least as good as an A4.

I presume from the thread title that you don't like the Accord? Old man has one, 08-plate, top spec with leather and sat nav etc, very nice place to be!

Few years ago, but I had an Accord on test for a few days and then bought a Mercedes C270CDi.

O i do like the Accord. Its fantastic. Just wanted to cover all bases before i take the plunge.

Any D5 engined Volvo will be pleasant company, although you won't see much better than 50mpg.

How about a new shape S80 for £10-11k with 60k, and put the rest in the bank to offset the slightly downward hurtling depreciation? Or a V70 with less scary value erosion.

Takes time to appreciate the 'Volvo' thing but its there. Every long journey in my V70 wafts past lazily, then you get out at the other end fresh as a daisy, as I did for a recent Calais-Limoges trip last week.

5 pot diesel sound is vaguely pleasant too.

I love the Alfa 159. It is fecking cool. However, when driving a friend's Sportwagon on 19's, the ride was so hilariously harsh, that were I a smoker, I could imagine biting my fag in half going over a draincover.

In all seriousness, I didn't find the ride ridiculous when I drove the TI model with 19s. There's a lovely one owned by Rochester TVR over on the Alfa forum which looks absolutely divine, though it is the 2.4 so economy would probably struggle.

To be fair I've driven a lower spec 159 courtesy car from the dealer and this was perfectly comfy.

I don't mind hard suspension, if handling and body control is required, but for wafting day to day on crappy road surfaces and a myriad of speedbumps I prefer a bit of cushioning.

Mmm, if you want to really waft, wouldn't the OP consider a Citroen C6? Catastrophic depreciation means you can pick up a loaded example for under 15k, with probably the best ride quality I've experienced in a car.

Ding !!! I'm lucky to get 40's . My 2.5 tdi v6 Audi was better even at 1 plus lepton...........
Accords a boring car. Have owned one for 3 1/2 yrs. Just can't quite stomach the depreciation of selling it and getting something fast and thirsty. Don't think they are Honda reliability too..............I have bills............

You must have been the 1% of unfortunates.

I'm on my second Accord and love them. Handling is not the best but the car is fantastic. Refined, spacious, cracking diesel engine, bombproof reliability, excellent SAT NAV, hands free bluetooth and superb dealer network.

I very nearly bought an IS220d but overall found the Accord a better car despite not having the badge.

Sadly I've only ever got low 50's on a long run (75mph) but it will give 60ish if you're doing 57mph constantly.

I think you can get better interiors on other cars and perhaps slightly better handling but this is at the expense of dealer quality, reliability and overall quality.

You can buy a 2.5 year old saloon for about £13k so is a no brainer IMHO.

They vary enormously - some wouldn't even do 40MPG, and low 40's is common.

I don't know if they've fixed this with the latest version of the engine.
