The Cooper S is faster, but obviously the best way your going to make a comparison is if you organise a test drive. Tbh the standard cooper goes really well, and you can have them chipped etc. Normally the Cooper S comes with more options, so that's a bonus. With the premium of buying/insuring/running a Cooper S it may not be worth it. Try 1 out, I own a GP and am extremtly impressed with the performance, but drove a cooper the other day, and should think "wow this is slow" but tbh I thought "this is pretty nippy". But try 1 out, hope this little bit of advice helps.

Hi,

I have a R53 Cooper S and am just about to sell it, and am thinking about downgrading to a Cooper. I just can't justify the poor economy of the Cooper S for a 1.6 warm hatch.

Get a well specced up Cooper and when insurance is cheaper get something more powerful. I'm glad I'm not a guy, my insurance at 21 on the S is £66 a month with 2yrs ncb.

I would say dont drive the S, The copper will be good but feal slow after driving the S. The S is nice but the copper and one have a nicer ride for every day, the S can be a bit hard. I have to admit at my age (insurance not a problem) I would put up with the harder ride but in your place I would drive a copper for 2 years save the money and then upgrade (2K on insurance plus the fule). MPG on the next genaration MINIs is a lot better.
