why am i thinking of buying this?

stuck with no car, don't really need one for this year, but driving's like an addiction and i just can't help myself.
if i was to buy a car it would be max budget a grand and unless it was amazingly fun and reliable id be selling it in approx 1 year (as in 1 year i'll be in a position to buy something a little more extravagant)
some screw in the back of my head has worked it's way loose and im considering a trip to hertfordshire (i could get there for free but im in edinburgh)
am i really that insane?

Because you have an imagination and a sense of humour ?
They are actually a bit of a waddly old thing, but loads can be done with them, engine swaps (Clio Williams, R5 turbo), LSD, lowered, caged stripped.
If you have some time, money and mechanical skills you could make one epic sleeper.
have a look on Retro Rides, few guys on there in the readers rides section with them.

How can i tell you've spent the evening with Mr A Murray Esq.? stuck with no car, don't really need one for this year, but driving's like an addiction and i just can't help myself.

The Volvo 340/60 was originally designed as a Daf before Volvo bought them and they were made in Holland. I believe they have a transaxle or was it a de dion rear suspension - anyway something in common with Alfas and used the Reanult engines. However, I bought a Mk III Golf GTI for £700 and that's a better car.
I'm going to be in the position soon where, as well as living within a short walk of supermarkets/shops/station/etc., I no longer need a car for work.
It's very tempting to, instead of having a car that's really only good at the one thing I'd no longer be using it for (commuting), buy something hilariously embarrassing like this and put the money saved on maintenance, tax, insurance and caring toward joining a classic/supercar club.
It's only the thought that selling my car wouldn't save the money for a supercar club by even the most extravagant man maths... and the difference buys an awful lot of Palmersport/Caterham/experience days, which I could get to in a comfortable car that's good on the motorway.

Have you considered an MR2 T-Bar? They can be got for less than 1k and are good fun (though insurance etc may be a problem)

again, insurance almost double thisi'd be buying it because it's cheap, a laugh and only has to last 12 months.
i also go to a college with a large automotive department <-- read garage, so getting my hands dirty under the bonnet would be on the cards
