how to insure 2 cars for 24 hours?

I am buying a Lexus and picking up at weekend. In order to get it taxed and transfer the new plate I was asked to insure the car from friday 10th sept with new reg. This means that my current car (Merc) will then be uninsured.
I need to drive 100 miles on saturday in the Merc to pick up new car and leave the Merc which is being part exed.

My insurance company is refusing to insure the merc for an additional 24 hours even though I am willing to pay.

Any suggestions?
