Another victim of the Renault Clio bonnet problem

I've been drumming my mind - is the Clio bonnet problem one of the worst ever factory faults? I think it even resulted in the Renault PR guy at the time quitting and turning whistleblower.

Puts the Ferrari 458 fire problem into perspective. That's a problem whereas the Clio is a serious safety hazard.

I wonder when all the calculations have been made, how many of the Toyota crashes were actually based on the accelerator. I've read a couple of stories about people crashing them on purpose to get a payout.

At least a few accidents were attributed to the driver being an idiot and accidentally flooring the throttle when they supposedly thought they were on the brakes. bks, says I. I subscribe more to the theory of crash car, blame Toyota, get big payout.

It's not surprising considering America's lawsuit culture. Fortunately I've never been a fan of Toyota or Lexus so the prospect of me purchasing one has never been very high.

Renault expect you to lubricate the catch to stop it from happening

When I close the bonnet on my 172 I push the catch in a few times to make sure it's clicked back in.

After US governemnt crash investigators carried out an exhaustive investigation, they concluded that aside from the previously rectified floormat issue most of the cases were due to the driver pressing the accelerator instead of the brake. This is, many motoring publications have suggested, down to the usual profile of Toyota owners (doddery).
