Getting sick of depreciation

Just done some numbers on owning the BMW M6 for a year and I have to say... not amused. Had I gone for a porsche, I'd have fared a hell of a lot better and probably been just as happy with the car too.

Another thing is, I just can't seem to grow up and my city driving style is getting worse (as in more aggressive and unsociable) and 10PS' blog has certainly made me think that one day some spirited driving could result in a lifetime of regret.

So, I was thinking of getting a Lexus RX hybrid, a trailer and a track car. That would allow me to commute to work, ignoring the CC, and also get some serious kicks on a track (300bhp/t can be had for relatively little money it seems). I get to keep all the comfort and gadgets in the city and at the same time get even more kicks in the track car.

so three questions:
Am I likely to get my public road driving under control if I join the track scene?
Is the lexus RX hybrid a viable tow car?
Am I just looking for an excuse to get two cars for the price of one and my logic is badly flawed?

Yep in m experience fast on the road seems a bit dull and slow

probably but if you can run an m6 then a tracktoy is washers

Blowing a large wad of cash on a big, thristy car is a sure-fire way to throw away lots and lots of money. Why not commute in a 20 year old range rover?

I've found I don't drive as quickly & am more patient on the road since I have been hillclimbing. No fear of losing your license either.

Interested to hear what this is.

Racing drivers say that they drive quite slow on the roads because they get their kicks on the track, so you might find it helps. Then again I've heard Lewis Hamilton say that and after Australia this year I really don't believe him

Well I loved every second of it and it has had three services so far, all of which combined cost less than any of the cars I had previously owned (not counting the M5 wich was awful but under warranty) and that inlucdes a renault laguna I bought for £650 as "need a car pronto".

Could your aggression stem from the fact you drive an M6 and therefore demand respect and some form of idle idolatry and expect people to clear a way for the mighty M6? Try a 1984 Toyota Corolla and get back. I find that driving an inferior car tends to allay any need to compete in any sense.

I think there is merit in your suggestion, but I think it is more the frustration that I cannot stretch its' legs and the few times I can,- I get blocked in by a bicycle or a micra. I also dislike having any passengers inthe car, because that means I must behave

The only way to cheat depreciation is with classic, or virtually worthless cars. Or new cars with a 4 year waiting list! Big knob cars will always cost you.

Are you commuting through London? I commute on a bike almost daily and would NOT want to have you sitting behind me getting impatient.....

I also drive (an E500) through London but never try to "stretch it legs" in town - it's basically nuts.

You have to get into the mindset that 30mph or even 20mph is just too fast in built up, heavily populated areas

buy a rubbish car instead, and i mean really rubbish, something like a 1980's polo with a decent lump in it, and rag it to hell. yes you will still drive like a d!ck, but this way you will feel like you're going fast when your not.

i know you're going to read this and just think its stupid, but honestly, if you want to enjoy driving, then so called 'drivers cars' are not the way forward. you need something thats fun, tough to drive and involving.
