First question.

What time of year is best to sell a sporty car?

I could do with selling my Type-R, and was originally thinking of selling it in spring, next year. But I'm contemplating advertising it now.

Would I be better off waiting until next year, or do you not think it matters a jot? Just concerned that it either won't get interest, or people will be offering crap money.

In addition, a couple of years ago I decided to take the plunge and get myself one of those windscreen banner, sticker thingies. I was pissed off in the Integra with the sun always shining through the gap between the rearview mirror and the edge of the windscreen.

I got a nice quality, expensive one, and did a really good job of making sure no bubbles in it, and IMO it looks tasteful and nice.

However, is the over riding opinion that they're chavvy and make me look bad? So would pulling the thing off be the best option, or don't we think it matters? I know many people detest them and think they're rank, but the car is modified, so will that bunch those people together and not detract from the kind of person that wants to buy it?

Apart from being a bit lower, the exhaust and this banner, the car looks standard. So it isn't some sort of ropey max power special.

Thank you for your time. smile

answer to question 1, you should be fine selling now...

Around xmas isnt really the time, due to bad weather and low funds - but unless its a convertible, they arent that seasonally effected.

as for the second question, does it say Dave & Carol on it?

The time of year makes more of a difference to a 4wd off roader or a soft top than a 'normal' car.

Wouldn't worry about your sun visor, provided it doesn't say 'Max Power' or 'Wayne and Tracy' on it!

Most buyers are looking for un-modified cars.. do your best to make it look un-molested is normally best to maximise your appeal.

I would say summer is probably the best, although its not much harder to sell in winter time.
Just avoide December / January.

I would remove the sun strip and make the car totally standard. You will get the best money for your type R if it looks untouched, even something as simple as aftermarket lights shouts to a potential buyer 'boy racer'

How has it been lowered? (Coilovers or just springs?)
What exhaust is it? (Adds power or just adds noise?)
Is the sunstrip plain or pattern/logo'd?
Are you selling to a fussy buyer or a chav?

I'd say take the sunstrip off to sell the car. (I'll admit I have a Japanese car with a sunstrip fitted, but then I like it and I'm not trying to sell my car. In fact, there's lots of things about my car which I would change prior to selling it because although I like them I want to broaden the appeal of the car and attract more potential buyers.)

To answer questions:

I said apart from those key points, it looks standard. However it very much isn't standard underneath.

The exhaust is not loud at all, it's a power-gainer that isn't all that much louder than standard.

It's lowered by way of Mugen coilovers and corner weighted.

I can't really return it back to standard, or 'un-molested' because: it has high end and expensive cams, valves, valvesprings, retainers, valve guides, injectors, ECU, intake, exhaust, headstuds, rod bolts. Currently putting out S2000 power.

Basically if you don't like modified cars, you'll hate it. I have had immense fun with it over the years, bought it in 2005. Owned and ran it without a view to selling it, if I was then I wouldn't have done anything to it. But as it stands, the amount of effort to put it back to standard would outweigh the benefit.

I took a couple of pictures quickly for reference, on the surface to the untrained eye it's just a low mileage, good condition car. When you know what you're looking for...

And here's the reason it has to go:

I await some form of flaming. smile

I see what you've done here. A sales pitch by stealth - nicely done Sir - even i was taken in for a while.

In answer to your question i'd leave as is - it actually looks ace. A couple of months ago when i was looking around for cars i'd have bought that if it'd been on at anything like sensible money.

Cheers,
Rob

It did start off genuinely, but as soon as you mentioned it I realised what I've done, but I can't go back on it now. getmecoat

Ok, it's a modified car. But having seen the photo that sunstrip is horrific. Remove it.

I think the sunstrip is personal preferance, but I would expect most people won't like it...look at it this way, how much extra do you think someone will pay for the car if it has it on there? I think it's far more likely people will not like it and stay away.

Otherwise it looks pretty good. Are those side window wind deflectors standard? If not I'd take them off too, I reckon it'd look better without. Also don't use either of those pics in the actual advert, the rain spoils the look of the paint and in the first one the colour of the car looks washed out, the light falling on it is all wrong (Look at the bottom of the wing mirrors...the red is nice and deep and smooth...that's how you want the whole car to look.) and there are too many reflections that take away from the lines of the car. The background is also too light, the shape of the car gets lost in it.

You're right in that it won't add value, I'm just a bit reluctant to rip the thing off, as it was embarrassingly expensive and hard to come by. Chances are now that I probably shall do.

Regarding the wind deflectors, they're not standard fit, per se. They are a genuine Honda product that comes as an accessory. In the same way as air conditioning, the optional pedal covers, rear strut bar, roof rack, etc. It's an option that can be added.

ETA, no I wouldn't consider using those photos, I nipped outside quickly and shot those with my camera phone, I'll use a proper camera. Thank you for your input. smile
