So I have had a 2000 MK4 golf V6 4Motion for just over a year. It has been fine for what it does but I am after something that is more fun.
I am also saving for a house so budget is tight. I am looking to spend around £5k-£7k. It must be safe in a crash (at least the same as the golf) and fun. As this will probably be my last car before I have kids 2 seaters are allowed. The other thing is that because I am saving for a house it must not cost a lot to run. This means better fuel consumption than the golf (not hard!).
So what do you suggest.

I like how you put this as your most important criteria after price.
What are you planning on doing to it?
Anyway, how about a Leon Cupra/Cupra R?
My reasons are that my missus is the one that will drive it during the week and I worry about her having an accident (not that she is a bad driver just these thing happen). I would never forgive myself if she was in an accident and because I brought a car that was not safe, she was hurt.
Leons are nice, but I just think they would be too similar to the golf and the fuel consumption would not be better.

Maybe I buy a car for £6k use it for year or so have fun and then sell it for £4k. People spend more than £2k a year on booze and at least I would remember the car!

If you keep thinking 'I want to have fun whilst saving', you won't actually save very much at all.
