A bit of advice please??

Evening all.

How do i stop my windscreen wipers from screeching across the windscreen, they're beginning to make my ears bleed!!

I own an M Reg 306 1.9TD and have been advised that i should do an oil change every 6mths, would you agree, or is once a year sufficient?

Mine screech a bit as well, many years ago I was told to cut a spud in half and rub it over the screen - can't confirm it works, but may try soon so shut mine up!

Oil change - depends how many miles you do!

That's an interesting suggestion, changing your oil every 6 months to prevent your windscreen wipers from screeching

Change your wiper blades and don't buy cheap nasty ones. If the blades are new(ish), give them a wipe with some white vinegar.

Just buy some new wiper blades. Get them from the dealers rather than Halfords aftermarket jobbies.

Get some decent wiper blades! Try treating your windscreen with rain-x or similar too.

As for the oil changes, depends if you are keeping the car til it dies or not - if you are then yes, if not then no. The rest of the car will fall apart before the engine does anyway!

Ok thanks for the advise guys, i'm off to buy Peugoet windscreen wipers this weekend before i drive off the road killing and maiming innocent bystanders whilst i swear profanities at my windscreen wipers, covering the inside of my windscreen with spittle and oblitarating my view!!!!

I do about 500 miles a month and hope the car will last another 3-4 years, how much should it cost on average just to have the oil changed every 6mths?? Yes i know i could do it myself but that would mean possibly breaking a finger nail

I use Carlack Glass sealer, it's like Rain X but lasts a lot longer. It's so effective you often don't need to use wipers, especially at night (not as mad as it sounds!)
I get it from Cleanyourcar.co.uk, but be warned - you can spend a lot of time and money on there.

Use good old Fairy Liquid on the glass (not the paint)and as said, use decent wipers though often the whole arm needs replacing if your springs are shagged.

Brilliant, that sounds like a perfect solution, i particularly find that my windscreen at night in the rain is a bloody nightmare after the wipers have been over it, i struggle to see clearly especially with head on traffic lights. Doesn't seem to matter what i clean it with inside and out it doesn't seem to improve it at all, i've tried vinegar and Autoglym products, so i'll give this Carlack Glass Sealer a wee look. Ta very much

I'm not sure quite how close the 306 is to the Citroen ZX, but the killer on those was the heater matrix, caused by not changing coolant every two years.

Whilst it is possible to change the heater matrix, and a new one isn't that expensive, it's a eight hour job for a skilled mechanic to change it. Oil change once a year will be ok, but do change the coolant when the oil is next changed.

My heater matrix went on my last 306 was gutted as i loved the car, but the heater matrix was going to cost more than the car was worth!! Decided to ditch it, and bought an equally old 306, female logic huh!!

If you are, or know, a member of CostCo they have some excellent wipers in stock. Made by Goodyear, they are easily the best wipers I have ever used (and I change mine every 12 months, as I really can't stand streaky or squeaky wipers). Only about £6.50 each.

I used to have a 306 DTurbo and I was changing the oil every 5K miles as I was doing a lot of stop start driving. The recommended interval is 6K I think.

Stick to the intervals as the oil was black as could be when I changed it. Bosch wiper blades seem to last.

As Notsofastfrank said Guillemot it might be worth trying this Carlack stuff, just looked it up on the cleanyourcar website, it's had rave reviews and is only £14 so worth a try me thinks

Ok thx Ricky, i was just being a cheap skate and hoping to get away with one oil change a year, probably not cost effective in the long run tho

Most cars have service intervals of 1 year or 12000 miles. I found that using crap oil will result in it being black,. Use a good synthetic and it'll be fine.

otherwise rain-x, and you may as well get some new blades, they should be cheap as anyhow.
