Bonnet Catches
Discussion
Hi All,
Got a wee problem with my passenger side bonnet catch. It came completely loose and fell off last week.
Anyway - so I've reset the catch seat so that the height of the catch matches the one on the other side, repositioned it - tightened it all back up so that it's "eesh" tight. And it works again. Sort of.
The drivers side one latches and when it does, however much more you push down, the bonnnet doesn't budge. The passenger side one however has got some spring in it. Is it just that I need to wind the shaft bolt even further into the seat (I've already wound it quite a bit more than the other one already) - or is part of the mechanism not latching properly ?
Any ideas ?
Thanks,
WG

After some work at David Gerald, including bonnet off, couldn't get mine open (nearside catch stuck)last week so drove down to Inkberrow on Friday. John managed to free up enough to get open and then reset the offending catch.
Point of e mail - both catches have been set so that spring on catch holds bonnet lifted away from body. The bonnet previously had two big rubber pads which DG's removed as part of previous work. It was a bit scary
when first drove with reset in this way as much more flex in bonnet but now seems OK and opens properly
BTW, there were 5 S's at DG's on Friday including mine.(V8S being washed, S3 sitting by showroom, S2 on ramps, looked as though working on back end, black S3 body off with chassis in yard looking like entry for rustyriggers competition - anybody here?

Basic answer is yes. If it's springing back a bit, then shortening the length of the spring should do it. They do need to spring back a tiny bit though to allow for some flex in the body and ensure that they are fully home.
However, that's assuming that you do have the pads at the rear corner points of the bonnet. If you don't, then lengthen the other one to give some clearance between the bonnet and the body work.

A-ha ! Right. That would be it then. Yes - I do have the rubber mats at the back of the engine. In which case I'll just wind in the catch a bit further.
(Thanks for your help also Shnozz - much appreciated).
It's odd, the problem started after I had the new AVO shocks put in - but you wouldn't think the two things were related would you ?
Cheers,
