Am I right in thinking 6.5inch speakers will fit OK?
Any experience with which ones sound good?

I fitted the JVC Mx5 Parts ones with no bother at all, all 3 holes matched up with the clip things that comes with them. Takes a bit of trial and error to get them lined up though. Think i put a review on their website as a lot of people had problems and i didnt!

Oh, they sound ok too thumbup

I also bought the JVC ones from MX5 parts and had no real trouble. The trick is to peel away the plastic backing from your original factory-fit speakers. It's a bit fiddly because the glue is quite elastic but after a few goes with a flat blade it should come off. You can then use the plastic backing as a housing for the new speakers, although you may have to make some small notches in the rim of the holder so that the speaker's screw holes fit.

This probably doesn't make a lot of sense if you don't have the parts in front of you though!

If you're going to do this then yes, 6.5" speakers work great. It's *really worth* doing the sound damping thing though. Either dynamat, or cheapo brown bread from eBay work great. Whilst you've got the door skins off, peel back the plastic liner and cover the inside of the door skin with it, and make a gasket up to sit the new speaker on. It makes a *massive* difference!

I am starting to think the Monkeys who 'upgraded' my Speakers a few years ago were the missing link in the thread.

Sound deadening? Plastic Cups? confused

I no nothing of these wonderous things.
I took speaker out of void, and replaced (bodged) new ones in the said holes.

Bugger.
I had a broken speaker hanging out of the passenger door by the thread of 2 screws, and nothing in the drivers door apart from a couple of very dodgy looking wires. You arent the only one!

Well, I fitted some JBL (I love JBL!) 29.99 Ebay speakers. They went straight in with no bodging and sound incredible, for what is a very bad car for acoustics! They are VERY recommended smile

Its a few years ago, but I think i fitted jbl GTO 628 - easy fit into the doors, I also replaced the headrest speakers with small alpine units - overall easy job, and great sound

I have JBL GTO828 (8" speakers) in my car powered by a (ancient ) Phillips 2x75W amp and they sound superb - more bass that I thought was possible from a pair of door speakers smile They are 2ohm so only really compatible with a power amp unless you manual says your head-unit can handle 2ohm speakers and only fit in Mk2+ (with a tiny bit of fettling - the holes in the doors are about 2mm too small rolleyes).

Is the amp a slim one that can fit behind the stereo?
I've thought about upgrading the stereo in my car, not sure what I want to do though.
An iPod dock would be nice, but double DIN units are relatively hard to come by (although I have found a couple that aren't too pricey; i.e. ~£250).

No, the amp I have is velcro'd behind the drivers seat. I have plenty of space there because the Elise seats are a lot thinner than the Mazda seats wink
My stereo accepts a USB device via a fly-lead from the back so I can play & control iPod/iPhone or plug in a memory stick. I have the iPod cable and have used it but mostly use a 16Gb SDHC card in a cheap card reader and leave it hidden away in the glove box biggrin
Also, my head-unit is single-din. I have a din panel with 3 gauges in it now but before that I had a DIN sized cubby filling the hole. There is a much better choice of quality single-DIN head units at a reasonable cost wink

Here's a (rubbish) picture of how mine looks...

They are GTO627. From experience though, any 'good' make at a reasonable price will be OK. I just like JBL smile

Yeah I've thought about a cubby (a bit more space for 'stuff' would be useful! biggrin). Do MX-5 parts or similar do one?
Hmmm maybe that's a better and cheaper option! smile

I got the 17cm Pioneer 2-ways from Autolink MX5. They are a direct fit, and sound great. Not bad for 35 quid either!

Thread resurrection!

Can landwomble, or anyone else, expand a bit on the use of dynamat in Mk1 doors?

I've just ordered the JVC speakers from MX5parts and a Dynamat speaker kit from ebay. Do I just cut a sheet of dynamat and stick it to the door skin behind the speaker?

Also I know about turning the speakers 90 degrees to line the holes up, but I've never fitted speakers to a car before. Can anyone expand on exactly what re-wiring I will have to do, or is it simply a case of swapping connectors?
