Following on from the "Today is Kill a Wasp Day" thread, I'm having quite a large problem with wasps right now. They've been nesting in our loft by getting through a tiny hole where wall meets roof outside at the back of the house. We booked an exterminator to come and do his stuff up there, but they've come back through another hole in the front and there are more of them. Normally this wouldn't be too much of a problem, as they'd be in the loft and we don't go up there. However they are somehow getting into the house and I have no idea how. For some reason there is a vent type thing in the ceiling near some of the upstairs rooms which has a few holes in it that presumably lead to the loft, and is where we initially thought they're getting in. However, we've covered all of these vents up and somehow they still get in. We're keeping the windows shut as well, and there's no more holes in the ceiling or anywhere else for that matter. They seem to have a keen interest in my bedroom too, I've found 10 dead ones on the floor in the past week, and also found a live one the hard way in my jacket (put it on, went outside and after I locked the door I felt a sharp pain in my chest, believed it to be my namebadge for work I went to adjust the pin and had a st fit when I saw the little bd). We're calling the exterminator again soon but when he last visited he told us not to worry as they'll die off soon anyway. I'm also curious as to where they are actually getting in, as now the vent is covered and the doors/windows are shut, I can't see for the life of me where it could be

Wasps are tiny, so they'll find a gap. Why not use some repellant spray yourself? Destroy the nests and use the spray and they won't come back. I had a problem with wasps a couple of years ago, put down some spray and removed 13 nests from my left and hey presto! no more problems.

Alternatively, you could just employ a gang of very large spiders to eat the wasps...

evil looking feckers - I had a nest removed when we first moved here, the bloke guaranteed they wouldn't come back and they haven't.

There are, the most annoying creatures when you're eating/drinking outside.

They are fecking dangerous too.

I have 2 minutes to inject myself with the epi-pen if I get stung or my throat starts constricting itself.

C nts. Kill them with fire, lots of fire. yes

I did consider going into the loft armed with a zippo and a can of lynx (finally a use for something I learned in year 8!) although seeing as there's a lot of wood around, that's probably a bad idea. I've noticed that the new bit where they get into the loft is where we join on to next door; although they're getting through to our house, is it worth informing the neighbours as well?

Well, a couple of hours later and I've still not found anywhere they could be getting in from, but there are a lot more of them in my room now. So I've taken everything I'm going to need for the rest of the day out of there (work uniform, laptop, boots, car keys wallet and phone) and left the windows open so the vile little things will get out. Or maybe they'll die off and the hoover will get them later, I don't know right now but I'm ringing the exterminator later, its getting ridiculous now.

Do you have recessed spotlights in the ceiling? We had a wasps' nest in the loft and they were getting into the house through the edges of the spotlights - the loft wasn't lined or boarded at that time.

Get the wasp man back pronto - if he treated the loft issue and it's ongoing he should happily return and sort it.

Yep, get the waspiminimator back to do his job.

As to how they're getting in, well unless each room is hermetically sealed, you'll have lots of nice waspy-sized gaps around light fittings, pipe work, cornices, all sorts. They'll keep coming.

Cheers guys will ring him in the morning. WRT where they get in, the only realistic place I can see them getting in is the vent type thing in the ceiling, but now that's covered up by 2 layers of card?

Bugger. Sadly I can't make it out of fire as the landlord will be unhappy. Don't have any spare sheets of metal or carbonfibre lying around which would be ideal

I love PH advice.

"How can I sort the wasps in my loft?"

- "expanding foam". Fill the whole loft? Roof voids are overrated anyway =)

Yep, surprised I've not had the "kill it with fire" option yet. Although the roof trusses are wood and that'd really piss the landlord off.
