Looking out the window at the BMW 6 series in the car park, my mind drifted to the idea of a diesel one and inevitably to the 635D.
Is it any good or is it a big lardy lump with no driving enjoyment?
There're still more than I'd pay for a car, but I might look at one in a couple of years time, so would I be wasting my time?

Actually I don't mind the look of them, probably one of the better looking BMW's of recent times.Is it any good or is it a big lardy lump with no driving enjoyment?

I guess my issue with them is, for similar money you can still get more performance for your money, and I suspect stronger residuals.
They are a big car, so will drive like a big car. They are very much a Euro take on a muscle (although maybe lacking the muscle in some guises). It is so designed for the US market.
If big coupes appeal, then I'm sure it'll be great, if they don't then it won't.
Lastly, I suspect it will very much be another 8 Series. As in sort of cool and funky once 20 years out of production. But never as desirable or wanted as a 3 Series.

I'm not baiting you. I am genuinely interested, as I am thinking of changing my car soon.
For covering big distances while still being able to sit in a torquey coupe that does better MPG than most its only real Rival would be an A5 3.0tdi or a new Mercedes E350cdi I think.
I am not a fan of the 6 series though so would always choose either a different BMW with the same engine or something else.

If it must be a diesel then it does limit choice a bit. But at this price range and type of car should mpg be the biggest factor??
Personaly would rather a Z4c or Z4mc over the 6.

I must admit I find the ubiquity of the 3 series coupe off putting no matter how good it is and I don't think the 6 is a bad looking car (personally I'd take one any day over the A5 or Merc coupes). A 911's a much smaller car internally too, so hardly a direct competitor.
I guess servicing and parts could be high on a 6, but 35+ MPG is pretty good for a car with better mid range punch than the 650.
Just idle curiosity really, I don't suppose I'll ever seriously consider one, just looked rather good out of the window and on paper.

I would say the cross-continent potential of the 635D is biblical. Get the right spec and colour and it's an awesome car.
Quite rare though. As said iAlex has one - probably the best person to talk to.

They're not even remotely similar cars though, the Z4 is like a go-kart in comparison to a 635d. You could almost fit a Z4 in the boot.If you want a 2 seat coupe, then both fit the bill. If you truly need 4 proper seats and a boot then a saloon is probably a better bet. Only if you need 2+2 does the 6 make sense.
