It depends on exactly what you want. How many vehicles you need to cover, if you have more than one, then you need personal cover, not just single vehicle based. Also consider if you need cover abroad, with most that is not included.
For some breakdown companies, it depends on how old your vehicle is. Some work on the age of the car, the older the more expensive the cover, some won't cover cars over 15 years old.
It then depends on what you expect the breakdown company to recover you after.
The AA will not attend if you've had any sort of a bump unless your recovery is attached to your insurance company and it's part of the agreement, the RAC will recover you after a bump but will then charge your insurance at a later date (you aren't bothered, as you'll also be claiming for the repairs)
For attendance, a lot depends on how busy things are at the time.
The AA & RAC will often send a patrol in a van the assess or repair your vehicle at roadside, then arrange a truck if it's not possible to repair.
The other companies sub contract to local garages (AA & RAC also use them for full recovery)so you usually just get trucked home or where-ever.
Run out of fuel and some will charge you for attending as it's classed as driver stupidity, not a breakdown. also punctures and your spare is unusable, or you don't have one (& should) they will either not attend, or charge you handsomely for attending.
Cheapest deals can be had through insurance companies or Banks.
I have 5 vehicles (various) the 2 older ones are 70 yrs old and 20 yrs old, I have full personal recovery through the insurance of one of these, which covers me for any vehicle that I'm driving, or passenger in, both in UK or Europe price this year was £59. Although I can get cheaper insurance, no-one comes within a mile of the breakdown cover, either price or type of cover.
Decide what you want then do some searching and checking, ask the questions, read the small print, don't think that they're all the same, they aren't!.
Just to put it in context, if you breakdown on a motorway without recovery cover, you have 2 hours to sort it yourself, or you can get the *Rota* garage for £150, or after 2 hours it will be removed and you still get charged £150 (+ daily storage rate until you pay up)
