Competition Time: Name that exhaust!
Discussion
While getting some new brake pads my local garage asked if I wanted a cheap TVR exhaust that was delivered to them by mistake.
It's got two straight sections (to connect to the downpipes) leading to the silencer and two straight sections leading up the the bent up exhaust outlets - sorry for the rubbish description.

Had a look at the exhaust on my S2 and see that the exhaust outlet pipes (from the silencer) bend outwards to accomodate the rear diff.
So any ideas on which TVR fits this exhaust? It's SS so someone could have a bargain!!

nasz, your exhaust sounds weird..
what you describe at your local garage is like my S1 and S2 exhausts were/are.
I think you have an S2/S3 catalytic exhaust on your car.. that had a bend in it to wrap around the diff IIRC, although only one of the pipes did this I think..
Cheers,
Matt.

Sounds the same as mine (S2). The diff hangs about 1/2" below the chassis, I don't think it would touch if the pipes were straight, but it would be close (and hot). I can't remember where mine was from off the top of my head, as it was done before just I bought it by DG's, so it may be a Peninsular? Matt, can you remember?
I'll try and get a photo up.

My exhaust has one straight pipe and one with the kink in it. AFAIK the kink is there to make the pipes a slightly different length and 'tune' the exhaust note.
If that's the case, the straight pipes are probably for an S but without the built-in acoustic engineering!
Please forgive me if I'm talking bo11ocks!

OK.. done a bit of research. From the Manifolds back:
S1 Exhaust. Straight pipes into the oval section, then oval section to the sguare box, 2 straight pipes from the square box
S2/3 Exhaust. Straight pipes into the oval section, then oval section to the sguare box, square box to another oval section, 2 straight pipes from the oval section for last 18" or so.
S2/3 Catalytic Exhaust. Straight pipes into the oval section, then oval section to the sguare box, 2 pipes from the square box one bent more than the other, the same as Andy's photo.
It seems that as the only difference between the cat and non cat exhaust is some bendy pipes, accordingly you can fit the cat exhaust to a non-cat car. Doubtless this is the only aftermarket design being made for manufacturing reasons.
Cheers

As you can see from mine, the bends are unequal in the rear section. As far as I'm aware the front pipes pass into one unified silencer on mine, which would prevent the exhaust from sounding like two seperate systems at the back. By lengthening one, the unified pressure wave will arrive at the rear of each pipe at different times, causing it to sound like two seperate systems again.

M@H said:I haven't got that arrangement... my manifolds connect to the downpipes which then connect directly to the main oblong silencer that's located in the corresponding section in the chassis. Can't see how there'd be room for any other sections!

Oval section? ![]()
The two pipes from the manifolds join into a single ovaled section before entering the square silencer box.
Heres a picture of the front section of a broken exhaust. (one of the pipes ripped out)

I'll post a picture later, but I can't get to them ATM as I'm stuck behind a restrictive proxy server.

I'll wager a pint you've got the oval section in front of the square one..
..either that or you have an aftermarket exhaust. The oval section takes the exhaust underneath the engine and clutch bell housing from memory.. Cheers

I think it probably is an aftermarket system as it's SS and they were only fitted with mild steel as standard weren't they?
(Not that I'm suggesting there was any sort of standard of course!)Mine has two seperate pipes one from each manifold that come down. Then 2 joints (one for each pipe) under the engine sump that take two pipes back to a square silencer that sits up in the space between the chassis rails where the propshaft runs back to the diff. Then two pipes emerge from the silencer and run straight back to exit from the rear.
Can't remember where the bottom of my diff is - I'll check.
The exhaust is a stainless item so is an aftermarket one but then I would have thought all of them would have been changed by now.
I'm sure about this as I've had the damn thing off four times in the last 2 weeks fixing the propshaft.
I'll take a pictures and post it soon

I felt the need to resurrect this old thread to offer my humble apologies
and confirm that I obviously owe you a
! Despite my protestations to the contrary, my exhaust does have an oval section in front of the main silencer. Obviously when I was remembering it before, that section of the exhaust had been erased from my memory!
I now stand corrected!
Cheers,
Richard
