Crap then, cool now

Today I saw a really well kept Mk2 Fiesta 1.4L with some decent alloys (not stupidly big boy racer ones but tasteful, well proportioned ones) and I have to admit it looked really, really cool looking. Stood well out against all the boring corsas and clios that were around it. I'm sure these were probably pretty crap cars back then, and are probably even worse now, but I have to admit it looked far more interesting than most of what surrounded it. Mind you I bet they were probably more fun to drive than say a modern 1.4 Fiesta!

Its rare now you see well kept old cars, but they just seem to have a lot more character than modern stuff, or is it just me?

Completely agree. I have a hankering for anything old that's a bit rubbish but has been well looked after. Montego, Mk5 Cortina, Mk1 Orion... something like that!

Interestingly as far as I can tell all the surfer/hippy/free spirit lot that gave the VW camper its image in the first place have long been priced out of the market and are rocking around in Mazda Bongo Friendees.

What this means for the future classic camper market, I'm not sure.

Friend had one back when I was 18. Felt totally over-engineered. Could really abuse it and it just came back for more. The one he had used a tall ratio gearbox that could hit 60mph in second. Lovely recaro interior too.
