I may regret posting this, but ah well.

Gutted. Just gutted. I was driving so well, my manoeuvres were perfect, as were my observations.

Then I came to this roundabout.

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&a...

I was in the right hand lane, wanting turn right onto the A6 Chorley. It was clear so I went. As you can see, a new lane forms on the right edge of the roundabout, but I went into the middle. She (examiner) panicked and grabbed the wheel and pushed me over to the right lane, because I was cutting up traffic coming from the left lane of the dual carriageway.

The weather was perfect, the test route was easy and the roads weren't too busy. I'm just so gutted at the fact that I was so close to passing, and that I have to wait 7 weeks before I can have another go frown

Don't worry about it, failing your test just means you're a terrible driver and shouldn't be on the road. It could happen to anyone who can't drive.

Aaargh! I feel for you!

Keep trying the website, they update it with cancellations as soon as they become available so you should be able to get one sooner.

Better luck next time!

Don't worry, we all used to be st like you. In the meantime, while you're waiting for your next failure, you can console yourself that you're in the majority... if there was a war between st drivers and us driving gods, you'd be on the winning side.

On my first driving test I drove through a pedestrian crossing which had a lollipop lady on it.

That seems a fairly poor set of markings, it looks like you have to go into the middle lane and then slope into the new forming lane.

Maybe it's just the angle of the picture, or the time but it seems a crap layout.

Keep phoning twice a day and you'll get one in no time

I failed my first one turning into the test centre, that sucks hehe

On the plus side the retake was a skoosh as I wasnt nervous anymore and knew Id only failed for something stupid (I still dont think it should have been a major fault anyway)

To be honest, even women who had passed their test would get confused on that roundabout.

That's Chequerbent roundabout and it's a st roundabout since they put in the new markings about 5 years ago.

However, your manouevre as described is correct.

Left lane is for left down A6 towards Manchester and it also runs around the roundabout (obscured by the truck to take you towards Westhoughton.

Your lane is for right turn only (as marked clearly) onto the A6 towards Chorley.

Correct prositioning for your lane is to be in the middle lane NOT the outside lane.

If she specifically failed you for that then you need to appeal / object, as wat you've described is the correst action there.

Edit: there is a risk that others going on to Westhoughton do cut the corner on the roundabout as it's quite tight (along with incompetent drivers), so you should've been aware of this, even if it did force you into an incorrect lane.

Hang on, oops, bit of a cock up from me.

The right lane (the newly forming one) is the one to be in and that automatically becomes the middle lane as you bear right round the roundabout.

You wouldn't believe I drove that roundabout every day for 6 years would youbanghead

Easier to see here, approach is the sliproad on the right of the overhead shot

It took me 3 attempts to pass my test. The first time I failed for taking corners too quickly, apparently something to do with also being a biker but I never quite got that logic. The second time I was trying to get out of a minor road onto a major road but my view was obscured by parked cars. Whilst I was gently easing out to get a better view the examiner panicing and stamped on the duel controls despite the road being completely clear.

Console yourself that it will make you a better driver. The thing I noticed was that all my mates who passed first time were mental when they lost their L plates and were pretty terrifying to drive with because obviously they were all invincible driving gods having passed first time. I do believe that taking a couple of retests thus proving I wasn't infact a driving god, plus perhaps also riding a bike for a year beforehand, seemed to make me a fairly sensible driver.

Personally, I passed my driving test 1st time, shagged the female examiner during the test then on the way home saved the world. Just try a bit harder next time and one day you could be half as wonderful as me.

Bad luck Tom.

Could easily have happened to me back in '93... [look into middle distance nostalgia moment ]

-But it didn't.

nobody! I turned left into the test centre, the entrance is over a dropped kerb and through a gap in the wall. I wasnt sure if I was going to hit the wall or not so stopped, checked around, reversed a foot, still on the pavement, steered a bit more and drove in. I then did a perfect parallel park but the beeatch failed me on steering for the entrance to the test centre.

Still, in the grand scheme of things it doesnt matter, Jenson Button failed first time too!

Hmmm very shoddy markings on that one. With the markings as they are on the roundabout itself, the left lane should really be left only, and the right lane should be straight or right.

If a car in the left lane was going straight on and you were going right you'd have to really keep your eyes on the mirrors for that first bit until you get into the designated lanes. There isn't even space for two cars within the lines!

Unlucky mate.

Unlucky, however now you know what it's like to fail, you can go a bit further to make sure you pass next time smile
