Vauxhall VXR8

Hi,

I'd be very interested to hear from anyone that has one or had one. I'm currently looking for a new car and had my eye on a used Focus RS, Impreza RB320, RS4 or E60 M5.

The VXR8 never even came into my mind until I spotted a lovely white one yesterday. After having a look in the classifieds they seem a cracking car for the money. I may be wrong but I'd imagine the servicing would be a little less than the RS4 & M5?

I have a van to use daily for work/running around so MPG isn't really a concern.

Any thoughts or other suggestions?

I'd say the Insignia VXR is more like the Audi (arguably better as well) and the M5 is a pleasure to drive but you have to take the car to BMW dealer to get anything done because of the computer codes and crap, so be prepared to bent over every time you need anything done.

The Holden is build for the colonial market and can be serviced anywhere, parts are reasonable cheap and easy to get hold of. Think of the VXR8 as a four door TVR and you get the idea.

They are certainly nice cars, but from what I've read, it's not going to be in the same class of driver involvement as the Focus RS or an Impreza. Then again, a 6.2L V8 has a character all of it's own, but it's probably not going to be as easy to throw about as the other two, mainly because it's quite a bit bigger. Depends what you want the car for really.

An annual service is about £150, discs are about £340 and pads £120 iirc. A fraction of the cost of M and RS cars.

Ask the question on the HSV/Monaro forum.I had it's predecessor the HSV GTS-R for 4 years from 2001-2005. Loved every minute of it.

I follwed a Bathhurst addition on the M4 once (I think its the white one used in the latest EVO).

It sounded truly amazing and the acceleration was awesome.

You dont see many of them too. Not sure about the interior but should be cheaper to run than an E60 M5 (which you shouldnt touch unless it has a BMW AUC warranty).

We had 4 of these beasties (VXR8's and Monaros) turn up at the last Essex meet. Really surprised by them to be honest. Build quality looked good, 2 and 4 door version available, nice looking car and an engine that you can do really silly things with

How about an alternative take on it.

How many articles, reviews or posts have you ever seen complaining about a Monaro or VXR8?

I'm not sure I've ever seen one.

You usually get even more than that turning up at the Midlands meet at Cosford. They sound fantastic for a four door saloon car

I've been having a look around this afternoon and found a VXR8 at a dealer about 60 miles from me so hoping to go and see it this weekend.

Service for a VXR8 = 10k=£148 20k=£148 30k-£199 40k=£148 50k=£301
Only 566 VXR8s in the UK so quite rare.

For the price of a good 1 year old vxr8 around £20000 with less than 15000 miles on the clock you will only be able to get a M5 that is 5 years old with 70,000 - 100,000 miles on the clock. M5 5 years old under 40,000 miles is £25,000

RS4 = 4 years old with 100,000 miles
RS4 = 4 years old with less than 40,000miles is around £25,000

All have same performance of 0-60 4.9 seconds and the same fuel consumption.

I've seen M5 servicing prices of £195 for oil service, £304 for inspection 1 and £476 for inspection 2.
RS4 10K=£146 20k=££172 40k=£366 cambelt service=£548 at QsTuning

Go for the VXR8, you will love it. I have had a few fast BMs but found them expensive to run and to be honest a bit boring and soulless...
The VXR8 is far from a perfect car, it requires a bit of effort to drive smoothly, the ergonomics are a bit odd (like cup holders behind the gear stick), it does axle tramp, and the SatNav is rubbish. But it is a great car to own, its faults give it character, people are always positive toward the car, its rare, insurance was the same as my old 540i, and when you get bored you can tune it up as much as your wallet will allow.
I admit the V10 M5 would better the VXR on track, but in the real world the 6.2 liter torque does make rapid progress so much easier than the BM.
The guys on the HSV forum are always great help and up for a laugh...
