Fairly Fast Family wagon - £8k

Giving up the company car in the next three months.
I need a family wagon budget £6-£8k. Needs to be reliable enough for 40 mile round trip commmuting each day. Also needs to be an enjoyable drive.
Thoughts so far:
Impreza Wagon - Could get a 2005-2006 model but a bit thirsty
BMW 3 series or 5 series Touring - never had a BMW so unknown
Volvo v70 - Possibly trubo model again unkown and appear to lose value
quickly over a certain age
Audi S4 - Perfect but potential bills scare me
VW Passat? Maybe
Fords and Vauxhalls don't appeal to me.
Any thoughts?

Hmmmm, as an only car doing 40 miles per day and having to cart the family around its a nice idea but the running cost would be pretty high.3 series isn't very big and you may get fed up of having to cram things in.
5 series is a good shout but finding an E60 diesel for your budget without stella mileage will be difficult.
Maybe a 525i?

Big Bills - i thing you are wrong there.. Fairly cheap to run and parts are no more expensive than a Eurobox. Even at main dealer prices. Servicing is every 10k so i dont think that is that short.
MPG could be an issue, but if you get it remaped you could easily get into the 30s mbut would need to drive like miss Daisy on the way to work.
My ownership of a subaru is a lot more positive than any other car so far.
My subaru Impreza ownership covered 60k miles in 3 years. Servicing never cost me more than £350 per year even for the major Services (Main Dealer). No major faults on the car in the time i owned it (2004 Model WRX).
I have had a Volvo for the last 2 years (Xc90) and have spend nearly £4000 in Repairs and over £1100 in Servicing. I have only covered 12000 miles in 2 years in the car!
That why my volvo is going and i am getting another Subaru at the end of the month and looking forward to the 3.0 H6 even if it only gives me 18MPG.
