Wow, that's a tough one. I Presume you mean racing driver (no stunt performers etc.). I also think you would have to break the question down a little. I would say that two names which stand out for different reasons within the sport would be Ari Vatanen and Ayrton Senna

Jim Clark was well before my time, but from what I've heard...



Other than that I'd be hard pressed to choose between Juha Kankkunen and Walter Rohrl - I'd rate Kankkunen the better rally driver (still competitive at top level at 50!) but Rohrl seems to be more versatile, being very good at circuit work as well.

I'd say Ayrton Senna has to be up there, especially after recently watching the biopic/documentary on his life and listening to the glowing reviews of his talent from pretty much all of the top F1 drivers alive.

In terms of F1, it has to Ayrton Senna - Not only was a supreme talent being the wheel, his understanding of the car was incredible

6:11 certainly goes some of the way though.

I tend to think of Bellof and Toivonen in the same sense - both almost undoubtedly the fastest of their time, both tragically killed before their peak.
