A Nevada State mayoral candidate has wooed car-owning voters by proposing a 'speed pass' system that will essentially allow drivers to speed for a fee.
Eugene DiSimone reckons the scheme could raise up to $4m (£2.6m) per day in revenue for state coffers.
DiSimone's proposal involves drivers paying an initial $48 (£31) fee to have their car safety checked and registered to the scheme. Thereafter they will pay $25 (£16) for a 24-hour pass to drive at speeds of up to 90mph on certain roads.
Approved cars are placed on a register so that if an officer catches them speeding, they're simply let go. A transponder given to each driver can be activated whenever the fee is paid via the internet or a phone call, allowing time-limited speeding.
DiSimone is a rank underdog to make office in the next Nevada State elections, but his plan has garnered instant support from motorists.
Talking on Seattle-based KIRO radio, DiSimone defended the proposal, saying that speed and accident rates are not inexorably linked.
He said: "the per capita highway accidents in the '60s and '70s when there were no speed limits is not significantly different to the per capita highway accidents today. It has nothing to do with speed limits."
Of course, the plan has drawn critics from those who believe it will lead to an increase in accident rates. A representative from the state of Washington claimed that "the wide variety of traffic speed in the traffic flow and drivers' abilities to make a decision at a high speed potentially would result in more speed-related accidents."

Would only work if the drivers themselves were subject to extra stringent testing. Just because the car's capably of 90 plus doesn't mean the driver is.
Then you have the situation where the motorway becomes a three-tier system, those who can afford to do 90, those who can't, and are stuck at 70, and then the trucks etc. which are limited to lower speeds.
Nice idea, would be terrible in practice. Imagine the cars that already do 90, only five times as many of them, trying to do that speed while the rest of the population gets pissed off and jealous in and around them.

If you drive on most freeways across the U.S. there are plenty of people already doing 90-100 these days. Long gone are the days when everyone drove at 55.
So unless the accident stats are already high, I wouldn't see this sort of thing affecting them. If anything, they'd fall if enough people were assessed and they policed the limits more diligently.
Can't see it happening, but you never know. Chances of it happening here, almost nil.

Pay to do upto 90mph on not even all freeways?? no thanks... I know that 90mph is a fair bit higher than the 55 / 65mph limits they have there but come on 90mph is nothing on even some b-roads here let alone one of their 400 Lane interstates or one of Nevada's desolate desert roads. Sounds like a new way for the government to make more money.

But, this is a stupid idea as the police are going to be stopping loads of people who can legally speed wasting lots of time, and making the speeding pointless as the time u would make up is lost whilst your sat getting interrogated.
You'd also get people saying oh i've paid when i haven't etc.

People do this already from what I can gather. I've read the posts from the 'le mans' possee who happily pay the fines because they have the cash to do so.
It's a ridiculous idea IMHO and sadly most people in the UK just do not have the maturity to drive quicky and responsibly.
If we had some German blood in us however things would be different

This is just speeding fines without penalty points, except you definitely pay before you get caught instead of you maybe pay after you get caught.
That's what it was like in South Africa anyway. I didn't mind getting a ticket if my bank balance wasn't in too much trouble. It was just paying a tax to drive fast.

I wouldnt mind having toll motorways here (Like the French Payage or however you spell it) Toll motorways with no lorries or speed limits and free motorways for lorries with speed limits.

I don't think it is a case of maturity, just that most motorists are self centred arrogant a-holes! Once people start realising that other motorists aren't there to just piss them off and that they could possibly have an equal right to be on the road, then maybe we could have safer roads!!
