As you may know I have had the engine is bits a couple of times this week,

The crank shaft seal is now sorted, I have had to put a new rad on as well as I noticed a leak from mine, put an alloy 52mm one on. Tight fit!!

All the timing is as it should be, and sounds perfect apart from one thing.

I have developed the HLA?? Or what ever the letters are, my tappets are making a noise, I had this only for 3seconds on start up previously and it went away, now its a constant. Why would this be??

Please help, and if I have to take it a bloody part again!!!

How long have you run the engine for?

If you've had the engine to pieces, I wouldn't necessarily be worrying about tappet noise on hydraulic tappets until it's run for anything up to 15 minutes, while they pump up again.

Is it all tappets, or can you narrow it down to one particular cylinder?

Cheers both, will do engine flush, and fresh oil in the morning.

Its only run for a couple of minutes so I could check is was timed up ok, so I guess that oil hasn't circulated around the lifters.

Makes me feel better now.

Whenever I change the oil (when there is constant HLA noise) it still does it for a good half hour after the oil change, until I get it out on the road and give the new stuff a thrashing through. Afterwards it's silky smooth for a few thousand miles. Wouldn't worry about it until you've given things time to circulate - which means a working through the rev range as well smile

Common sense applies, though - remember that the noise you're getting is the flank of a cam lobe smashing into a tappet because there's a larger than proper clearance.

Thraping it up to 7,000rpm on cold oil probably won't help prolong the life of your engine. wink

You do sometimes need to get the oil warm enough that it starts thinning down, and enough revs to maintain decent oil pressure with the warm oil, though.

What he said - all the oil will have drained out while you've been working on it. If everything else is working, then just take it for a drive, get the oil warm and the pressure up. 9 times out of 10 it will just dissapear.
