Does age relate to your favourite cars?

Was just chatting about favourite cars with a friend, usual pub banter really.
Anyway, my favourites consisted of cars that came from the 80s/ 90s, stuff like 964RS, Aston Vantage X Pack, Ferrari 288GTO and Bentley Mulsanne T.
I was born in 73, so started getting into cars in the early 80's and that total immersion remained through to the 90's. This was a time when I read all brochures, magazines in fact anything I could get my hands on that was related to cars. Although I have been into cars my whole life, this was my most intense period - a time when I could list the spec of any new car you could name!
Now, when asked to name my favourite car, I revert back to that period. The 80's and 90's are where I would look for my dream garage. Today's GT-Rs impress me, but I don't ache to own one like a do a Lambo Jalpa or 560 SEC. The 997 GT3 I drove recently was amazing, but would a choose it over the aforementioned 964 if I had the money? I'm not sure.
Is this true for everyone? Does birth year make a difference to your dream cars? Maybe it's just me....

You could be on to something, I was born in '85 and love stuff like the F40, Escort Cosworths, 205GTis, the the first Evos, the R34 Skyline, Audi RS4 etc. Basically, 90s stuff.

Nope with you there completely. I was born in '74 & really got into cars during my mid-teens.
Pretty much everything available new on the market today leaves me completely cold.
I would love something from theate '80's / early '90's, but require a car to be 100% reliable, which kind of forces me to buy nothing more than 3 or 4 years old for my daily driver.
Having said that, my '84 Series 3 Landy hasn't let me down once - if only my ears could stand a 50 mile clatter to work every morning!!!

Perhaps less to do with your actual age than when you got 'into' cars? I was born in '79 and always loved them but didn't become completely and utterly obsessed until '92 - and funnily enough most of my favourites are from the 90s. (That said my dream garage would contain something from pretty much every post-war decade).

I know where your coming from.
I was born in 1971, and likewise my intrest in cars was in the 80s, Porsche 959s and Testarossas, that kind of thing.
I do still like GTRs and the latest Ferrari 458 and would love to own one, how couldnt I?, but aswell as the 80s supercars the stuff like CRX's, Lancia Deltas, Audi Quattro and MK 1 MR2s I think are fantastic.
Oh I missed the Countach and that girl reaching for that tennis ball in her Knickers

I was born in 1975 and could have written your OP myself. The same goes for motorsport too, I'm more interested in the Sennas, Prosts, Toivonens, group B cars etc than their modern equivalents.
Everything seemed to have more character back then, although as you say some of it must be due to being of an impressionable age and a sponge for information.

I lust mainly after cars from the early 70s, mainly Italian classics.. I appreciate anything different, or interesting, the age doesn't really matter to me.
'Skylinecrazy' - Mainly came from my first experience in a fast car which happened to be in a mildly tuned R32.
Oh, and for the record, there's only a few cars from the 80s which can even be considered as attractive IMO. Was a very bleak decade for car design!

I used to say exactly the same thing about the 70s - it was the oddest yet naffest period ever. Except these days a lot of 70s cars are looking might attractive again...give it a few years, you might fall in love with some 80s metal (and I don't mean Megadeth).To a degree. There will always be that part of me that thinks when I win the lottery I will have a Countach. I have read and heard they are horrible to drive, park etc.. BUT let's face it, she was THE supercar when I was a kid.
But these days I have a wide range of cars I love, from the 60s and 80s and 90s and even a 458 or V8V from "modern" times...

I was thinking this the other day when posting on the 'top 10 cars you have to own' thread.
I'm a year behind you (born in '74) and the cars in my list were either mid/late 80's or early 90's.
There were some guys who I assume were younger who were very keen to have Japanese stuff of the last 10 years, including what appeared to be many variants of the same car (Impreza/ Skyline/ Evo). These cars do very little for me, although I'd still like to have a go in one.

I love classics; '60s and '70s mostly, which is not quite something that tallies with my 1982 vintage. Looking back at it though, the books and magazines we had at home were mostly classic car based, which is why to this day when I'm walking down the street a well-kept Morris Minor or Volvo Amazon will hold my attention longer than a Ferrari.
I know it's weird but while I respect supercars and wouldn't ever turn down a ride in something seriously quick, I don't get that "one day..." buzz from them. But show me an outclassed old heap like a 930 Turbo and I'll be salivating.
You have no idea how much I'm looking forward to the day when I have a spare parking space in a garage that isn't leaky and full of damp!
