When is 4x4 NOT a 4x4?

A family member has recently brought a 54 plate Jeep Cherokee, he decided to take it in for a service before it's first long haul and was told that the car was only running as a 2wd. He contacted the dealer and told them this and they have basically told him that they will not give him a refund. He has had the car less than a month, what consumer rights does he have in this situation?

Is the car switchable between 2 & 4wd?

Is it that the transfer box (can't think of correct term) is faulty and it's stuck in 2wd?

If so, I would expect the dealer to fix what's broken under warranty.

Wasn't aware that any cherokees were only 2wd, but have been wrong before - many times

When it is a Range Rover Sport? Or driving through the city of London? It's then just a posh people carrier.

You state "it is running as 2WD" which suggests the car is a proper 4WD but there is a problem with the running gear and only two wheels are being driven. If this is the case then surely the dealer has to rectify the situation as the car is clearly not as it should be.

Try the local Trading Standards for advice because I beleive the car has to come with a 90 day "fit for purpose" warranty from a dealer based on your consumer rights. Could be wrong though.

Correct, it is a problem with the running gear. From what he has told me the garage told him that there was a part missing.

Re the warrenty, that's what I thought. Will get him to check that.

Still Permanent four wheel drive though.
Handy for scaring the spandex wearing, redlight cyclists in the city though, hours of fun! Bank junction is best.
