Came home last night at 10.30pm to our new build estate where our landlord owns 10 of the 20 houses. Girlfriend comes outside to get something out of the car and the front door shuts behind her. We are now locked out as I was in her car and she keeps house keys and car keys separate.

I phone the landlord (apologised for calling so late) and asked if he had a spare key. He called back 20 minutes later to say he had no keys for the house at home but will try the estate agents in the morning.

Luckily my parents are only 45 mins away so stayed there for the night. 9.15 I tried calling LL, but no reply, 9.30 calls back saying he will now try estate agent. No answer from him so I drive back to the estate agent which is near to our house. They never received a call from him, or keep a set of spare keys. I asked if they have a number for a locksmith they may of used as im new to the area, they didn't have a number as they never used locksmiths, but they gave me the useful suggestion of looking in the yellow pages or on the internet. (I had to repeat I was locked out once more)

I phone the LL and he says we have the only set of keys for the house, but he may know of a handyman who can help, I asked if I should call a locksmith but he said no he'll sort it. An hour or two passes and I have to chase LL again as he forgot to call the handyman, but rest assured he'll sort it.

I call again an hour later and he gives me the number of a handyman who cant help, then gives me the number of our estate agents. I phone them again who then give me the number of a local locksmith!

Its 3.15pm, I've been sitting around all day chasing people, when I could have phoned a locksmith myself this morning and gone to work!

I have an hours wait then I have got to pay £65 + vat to open my door which I could of arranged at 9 am this morning.

Im only writing this as I need to rant at my crappy day, I appreciate its our (birds) fault for getting locked out. Hope it brightens your day!

Lesson learnt - copy those keys!

Ask a mate to get you a number
Go to a phone box and get a number

honestly you could have phoned 24hour locksmith and not had all the hassle.

Why should your Landlord run after you after YOU lock yourself out. Seems like he was trying to do you a massive favour- now way would i expect our landlord to sort us out if we lock ourselves out.

OP - what on earth makes you think the Landlord is useless from this story.

Surely the title should be useless girlfriend - afterall she was stupid enough to lock herself out and stupid enough not to be sure where her spare keys are.

Why not take some accountability for your actions. I am sure you have been tutting all day about how useless your landlord is when the blame is a lot closer to home.

Amazing.

In a similar vein, why not read the OP before ripping into him?

Perhaps I was a little harsh however the thread title did not bear any relevance to the content of the thread! I was expecting a story about a landlord not fixing something or similar.

I am only blaming ourselves for locking us out and not having a spare!

However our land lord was adamant(sp) he would sort it and call us back as he pays into a management scheme which runs the close, and "has people which deals with these situations". At every opportunity I offered to sort a locksmith, but was told to leave it, I would have sorted it first thing this morning.

I was just frustrated as I had to keep chasing for an update and in the end I sorted it myself.

It brightened my day when the locksmith turned up 2 hrs late just as we managed to flick the handle using a various tools taped together.

I perhaps should have titled it different I admit knowing the pistonheads way, but after talking to the other neighbours the LL has a history of acting a bit half soaked!

The thread was meant to be a piss take out of myself,so some of you can come down from up there now.
