I parked on a single yellow line at 7pm last Friday. There were no signs indicating time restrictions whatsoever, and therefore I stupidly assumed it would be okay. When I returned 1 hour later, I discovered my car had been towed away and had to pay £200 (£50 fine and £150 release fee) to get my car back!

Does anybody know if I have grounds for appeal, as there were no signs where I parked saying it was a restricted parking area/tow-away zone etc.

Any advice/help would be much much appreciated.

A single yellow line means 'no waiting during times shown' - although if there is no sign then I can't see how it is valid . . . but knowing the councils they may interpret no sign as meaning 'at no time'.

I thought double yellow line meant no parking at any time, but with single yellow it's only during specified hours which weren't specified in my case...!

If you want to do a full hatchet job then:

(1) View the Order making the Waiting restriction.
(a)Is it a 24 or partial restriction.
(b)Does the line cover the length of the
restriction described in the Order.
(c) Any exemptions that would cover your stop?
(d) Any reference to signing?

(2) Waiting restriction you mentioned has to be signed
in accordance with Traffic Signs and General
Directions 2002. Single line is Sign 1017 that has
to be accompanied by Plate (Sign 639) advising the
times of the limit either 24hr or partial. Whilst
I do not have access now to Highways "Bible" on
such matters my notes state plates should be on
every lamp post. If no lamp posts or posts more
than 60 metres apart additional plates.

(3) Check the termination point of the line as
mentioned in the Order.
If it doesn't have a "T" bar at the end it
doesn't comply with TSDG so ticket invalid. (Not
necessary where line meets pedestrian crossing or
parking bay.
