Took the car down to M-Tek in Northampton yesterday and said wanted decent set of pads, hoses and brake fluid as my brakes are shocking.....

He is going to get back to me with some suggestions and prices, told him didn't want anything whats going to chew the brakes but I can trust after its been worked.

Any suggestions chaps?

As always much appreciated........

I'm listening too, as I've discovered one of the cars few weaknesses...

I switched from standard pads to Axxis Ultimate which significantly improved bite and overall performance. They were recommended by CA Automotive as some of the other pads squeal too much for road use. Pagid are also recommended by they are quite noisy.

Expect a higher amount of brake dust but it is relatively easy to clean off with a decent alloy cleaner.

BF Goodrich will sell you a complete set of clear plastic coated braided lines for about £100 complete with stainless fittings. Also I have two un-opened bottles of AP 5.1 fluid sitting in my garage doing nothing if you want to PM me?

eta I'm only in Herts and any excuse to take the bike etc...

If you stay with the standard brake set up, I'd be fitting the braided lines and some Pagid rs29's. They will dust up more than the standard pads and they'll squeal a little too, but the up side is that you'll have gone a long way to solving your issue.
(I use these in my BBK set up, but also use them in the track car, M3).
There's also the newer RS15 (grey), I've not tried these yet but they will be going on when the current 29's life's end.

£100 for goodridge lines!?!? That's daft! I can get them for around 60 for stainless lines!

I run STD discs and pads with dot 5.1 fluid and goodridge lines. Shame there is no ds2500 listed for the e39

Are the wheels balanced correctly? If so does the steering only shake when the brakes are hot? How worn are the discs? My thinking is that if the discs are shot then they may be starting to warp.

If the discs are new(ish) were the hubs cleaned before they were fitted? IIRC AP recommend a run-out of less than .004" or they may not have been bedded in correctly.

Does the car tramline excessively or any strange wear patterns on the tyres? As this may be a clue to worn suspension.

Where abouts in Beds are you? As the wet-rep looks good and I can drop the fluid off after the meet at the Cowper Arms.

EBC Red Stuff.

or if you do track work try EBC Yellowstuff.

Both bite really well and now have a new improved compound that produces less brake dust (though that will only really show up during repeated hard braking). Plus they look pretty cool too

I use the "Old Welwyn Mechanics' Mafia"

The tea/coffee is awful, I receive large quantities of verbal abuse, I have had false rumours of sniffing ladies bicycle seats started about me AND I have to buy them lunch!

BUT

They are bloody good at what they do! They reccomend genuine BMW parts and look after my car as if it were their own. I'll PM later when I get in.

I have just fitted EBC Red Stuff to my E39 M5 with new disks and can confirm that the bite is improved over the original pads, cant say I've noticed lower levels of dust, but I have only just about run them in.

Once the top layer of the brake pads wears down (after 300 miles or do) there should be lower brake dust. That said, brake dust is a small price to pay for improved braking performance.

Any ebc pad is crap (imo), Hawk HT10's are awesome but will fk your wheels in no time at all and are bloody noisy!!

For a middle ground pad i would opt for stoptech's new fast road/track pad, ive used them on track and road and to get them to even fade on track you have to stop from silly speeds multiple times.

Ive used all of the ones mentioned in this thread, bar the pagids (silly money imo) and the stoptechs are the best.

Now if money was no object i would be looking at a BBK (ap's, stoptech etc).
