Help with Cat C write-off (Mk3 Golf)
Discussion
Hello all
I was hoping that someone could offer me some advice on a cat c write off as I'm not sure what's the best thing to do. I am not really a Pistonhead but I've been told that you guys are very helpful with the clueless like myself!
My P reg Golf was involved in an accident and the other driver's insurer has written it off as a Cat C. The damage is not too bad but it's an old car that's a little past its best, so I've decided not to repair it as I was thinking about getting something newer anyway.
I know the easiest thing to do would be to scrap it but it seems a bit wasteful as it's only the front driver's side wing that's damaged and I thought that anyone wanting a project or needs the parts for spares could do something useful with it. However, I am totally confused by the VIC requirements - I still have the V5 but am I right in thinking I need to get a VIC done before I can sell it on? I've called the insurance company who wrote it off and they sort of suggested this (although I thought they would have taken the V5 off me if this was the case?)
I guess my questions are:
- Do I need to get a VIC done?
- Is it really worth it?!
- Could anyone actually do anything with a battered Mk3?
Thanks so much for any advice (I've also posted this on the VW PH forum)
Cheers

First things i would do if you are to sell it on are to rip up the current mot and v5 document, that way if the buyer decides to sell it on himself and didnt declare it as a cat C accident write off you may get into a bit of bother with the dvla.
Or you could get the vic test done (its only a check of the chassis numbers/vin plates) and costs around £30-40 and you will then recieve a updated v5 document which will state its been damaged/repaired and will show the date it passed the vic test.
The test itself only takes around 15-30 minutes and ive not have one fail yet, but i only but them from approved auctions not from ebay , etc.
If you decide to have the vic test done you need to contact VOSA as they are the ones who carry out the tests.
Hope this helps.

Yes, if it's a Cat C, no if it's a Cat D.- Do I need to get a VIC done?

Not for you to say, as you'll only know if someone buys it off you as you describe it as a project for someone else. On a personal note, I'd hazard a guess at no, as it's a 15ish year old car. Rmember your payout should be reduced by the amount that the insurance company value the car in it's current condition, so around 20 -30% for a Cat C. Do you think you'll recoup this when you sell it on?hls123 said:
