particularly bad at the front. Not on the sides or rear of the car though. Stands out less on silver that it would on your black car, but I will still get the front end repainted in another year or so.

When black looks good it's looks stunning ... but dark colours are always prone to showing the stone chip marks. I had a black M3 - looked like it'd been pebble dashed by the time I'd done a bunch of track days.

Ah well... it's only money

Don't know about cost, but I imagine an OPC would expect to pay for a "front end stone chip respray" before offering a car for resale in the showroom.

Edited to say this thread seems to clear up the cost issue:

I have a metalic black 944S2. There was not a mark on it when purchased but now the tiny chips, that must have already been there, already have now appeared as white marks. I'm sure it must have previously been polished with one of those 'coloured' polish/restorers that you see on the shelves of Halfords etc. Has anyone tried or proved any such product successfully for the problem described? and can you use it and then apply a decent Zymol or similar polish over the top?

You would think Porsche would offer an amourfend type material to cover very vulnerable places like inside trailing wheel arches. It can't be that difficult at manufacture stage, maybe offer it as an option.

I also have a metallic black S2 and its front end is plastered with chips. The black lipstick fillers by Turtle wax do work very effectively and then a nice coat of Zymol wax over the top lasts about a year.

They gradually reappear (or probably new ones), so I just keep on top of them. Its a daily car so a front end respray would just be a waste.

There's an article in the latest '911 & Porsche World' about repairs done by Chipsaway. They refinished a PU on a 964 that had received a knock, and the write up was good.

Got to be worth a try I suppose? - Does anyone have any experience of them?

I think they're run on a franchise basis, so quality might vary from operator to operator (?)

Mines black too, and also have stone chips.......two things which seems to reduce or stop this...
(1) Do not use AUTOGLYM wax
(2) Don't drive too close to the car in front

Not seen/heard stone chips to your extremities though, try not to do donuts in gravel pits

Yip I'm a big fan of the Halfords type coloured waxes- used Halfords own on 3 of my black cars & Turtle wax colour magic (or something like that)on red, all on 10+yr old cars where normal white stuff makes the chips look awfull.

Never used a product like Zymol on top of it tho, but must say its good quality wax & the car does look good for a fair old while.

"Don't drive too close to the car in front"

That's the key!!

But, and I can't understand this, I have stone chips on the leading edge of the rh door opening in front of the wheel arch, but NOT on the immediately adjacent trailing edge of the door!!

I don't know how my previous owners managed it but when I got my car there was not a mark on it. Previsou guy used it for concours etc. He even painted the brake disks!
Fortunately all of that girlie stuff is burnt off courtesy of a few track days and the front now has a badge of honour!

That's got little to do with it. Often, stones are thrown from traffic travelling in the opposite direction. The only time I have ever had a stone break the windscreen, I was not following anyone at all. The growing trend over the last few years of people overtaking on chevroned parts of the road often throws stones in all directions. And this morning, a tractor had dropped lots of earth containing small stones onto the carriageway. There's not much you can do about it. It's more dependent on which roads you drive on than anything else.

Had lots of experience with Chips Away and all good,

They are a franchise so chat to the bloke near you and get a feel. But they are usually upfront as to how good a job they can do (some colours are next to impossible).

I have had paint repairs on 3 different cars some big some small and an alloy wheel repaired and Im happy with all the work from 2 different people.

Come trade in time a dealer would value a car down if it has extensive stone chipping and he planned to retail the car...a front end respray and the mirrors would cost best part of £1000.........I always view it dimly if a car is heavily chipped, shows signs of a hard / fast life, and/or plenty of trackdays..........certain colours chip much worse than others..........the worse colour I have seen for chipping is BMW maritius blue..terrible.

Surely there's no way anyone can conclude that a car must have had a hard / fast life or plenty of track days just because of stone chips. I only have to follow a car or truck for a while (not close) to pick up a stone chip or two. Any car a year or more old without stone chips must have had a paint job, I can't see any way of driving my 993 without picking up chips every time I use it. ...and I repeat, I don't drive close to the car in front because I want to avoid chips if possible (I just get past them!).
