Dang Bluray drive

So,
I was playing Mafia 2 this afternoon and it crashed, no biggie I thought and reached over to do a reset. Three beeps later and the PS3 is still running, I reach around (fnarr!) the back and flick the power switch off and back on. When the PS3 reboots there is no disc icon! I remove the disc and reinsert and it comes back! Sadly when clicked, the PS3 screen went black and did nothing and now the icon is gone forever!!!
So, what to do, PS3 is 3 years old almost and a 40Gb fat. It is still operational so I should be able to backup all my game bits and transfer them across to a new one.
I could in theory get a slim, repair the current one myself or send it off to sony.
What does it sound like? Whole Bluray drive or just the laser? Because that should cost around £50 to fix, how much does sony charge?
